yes, increase gradually to build up stamina, otherwise, if you are out-of-shape you will be so sore you will talk yourself out of exercising.
fitness, diet, and exercise are lifestyle issues that should be phased into if you plan on staying on the program.
and it will take most people about 1 year of steady work to achieve and maintain a high level of fitness.
now, keep it goin', and soon you will be in the top 1% of fitness.
if you are over 30 consider a different fitness regime for cardio (i.e. bicycling) jogging long-term does cause joint stress and can accelerate damage in later years. (arthritis, tendon probs, knee probs, etc.)
if you must jog, get very good running shoes to mitigate joint stress.
