I'm curious where you're getting your information.
I was preparing for a race a few months back and almost overtrained, so to prevent my body from going catabolic my trainer instructed me to ease back on cardio and focus more on pushing weights. I've never heard that increased protein prevents catabolism... I've heard anabolics do, but never protein.
