Protein diets are referred to as "Ketogenic Diets"

just eating protein/low carbs will prevent you from any gains because on effect of no carbs is dehydration and there is no way to compensate for it.

there are "Cyclical Ketogenic Diets" used by body builders to lose fat/maintain mass where they eat high carbs on weekends, low carb during the week

Lyle McDonald has a book called The Ketogenic Diet which is probably the best source of information and most well researched.

Dr Atkins does not
