These days is a key point here. This occured in the late 70's and early 80's when it was just being learned that a new syndrome called GRID, (Gay Related Immune Disorder) that we now call AIDS, was possibly transmitted through blood products.
I think it's only fair to say that if the company was following regulations then that this doesn't make them some "evil corporation".
