The new generations using "Clouds" are INSANE.

It's bad enough that we are slowly losing every ounce of privacy and Big Brother is looming over all of us, but now the new generations growing up with computers and smart phones are making it even easier for all their data and personal info to be monitored and stolen with ease.

Clouds.

Uploading all your personal data, banking info, codes, etc.. to an external server is just insane.

New lap tops are all now being designed with no hard drives (to keep them thinner and cheaper) forcing people to use Clouds. Not only are clouds a new way to make more money, but the info they gather and sell is worth even more.

Ah, the Cloud. A great name, sounds so comforting and safe. Sounds much better than "An external computer that stores all your precious information and can be accessed by the highest bidder."

Most adults don't know shit about computers or data protection and kids think storing data on a cloud is normal, so when they are in their 20's, banking, shopping, etc... having all of it stored in a cloud will be the norm.

WHAT THE FUCK IS HAPPENING TO US ALL?

CAN'T ANYTHING BE DONE TO STOP THIS? All of us are just fucking sheep being monitored online, drones in the sky with cameras, it's getting worse every year.

It's happening now. Right now and it appears that nobody really gives a fuck. We just watch the trendy commercials about it on TV and think everything is A O.K.

Parents wake the fuck up and wake your kids up about storing personal data.

People go to great lengths buying Norton, etc. to protect their data and try and protect their identities to prevent ID Theft....then they turn around and store all their data on a soft fluffy Cloud. UN FUCKING REAL.

Personal cloud drives are available and useful.

Explaining all this to a millennial sounds like 'hey you whippersnappers, get off my lawn!"

How about there isn't single open source coder in the world with the resources or expertise to cause data to elude a trillion dollar organization like the NSA for long.

I always used the russian alternative: https://diskcryptor.net

About everyone using cloud backup: you are not forced to. People who know how, are still doing encrypted backup in usb pens while working on ram disks.
Cloud backup it is useful for most people (those who are not doing encrypted backups), for example I always get friends (esp. girls) who come desperate to me with the drama: "I broke my iphone it fall off while [insert here a pulp scene] and I lost all my phone number contacts, now I purchased this $100 android phone how I do?"... then I login her apple id, export cvs, import in her google contacts, it shows in her android phone, and she's saved.

It's the conditioning of the newer generations getting used to uploading everything to their cloud that is the damaging part.

New lap tops are being built without mass storage forcing people to use clouds. It's the wave of the future.

When kids are 9, 10, 11... they love new things, technology and the feeling of being part of something that is bigger than themselves. It infects them at an early age and continues thru their teens, then on to adulthood.

Today it's pics, joke links and songs... in a few years leads to emails, all searches, bank info and purchases. Big bucks for Big Brother and the NSA.

It's just like smoking. They hook these kids when their young and dumb.

Encryption? Please. We are talking about "people" not computer gurus. Kids don't give a fuck about anything, they just want that instant gratification and to be a part of the next trend without thought. Hey, if the parents don't give a shit or care, then why would the kids?

The NSA is going to have it so easy once the population is hooked on clouds.

"as it may contain".

It's opensource and one of the most used softwares to encrypt data. If there was some kind of backdoor or something we would know.

Yup! I hate clouds. The only cloud I use is the Amazon cloud for my mp3 albums I buy. My ipad only has 16gig of space and with what I have on my ipad and in the cloud I prolly have close to 50 gigs of music. No way would I store important files or passwords in the clouds. that is why I have TB external drives.

It's not like someone will find a "secret password" to Truecrypt that can decrypt all data. lol.

But try "lricFF¤%&/3df" it might do what you're looking for!

That's a rather broad generalization.

I can't profess to say what "most all people" are doing with their cloud.

I tend to side with those who have reservations about using cloud storage, though...even for non-sensitive storage of just music and pics. It's easy to get lulled into a routine of false sense of security...and then the day comes you opt to upload a bit of personal data 'just temporarily' (for lack of a better place to store it at the time) - and now it's potentially out-in-the-wild.

the fact is most people have no need to alter their lives so as to avoid the NSA. and by most, that's closer to 99% rather than 50%.

OK. I can profess to say that. Most people's shit in cloud storage is music and images

People get lulled into a false sense of security every day, that's their concern, lock the door next time, but to extrapolate from that that we're all supposed to be paranoid of cloud storage because, you know, the NSA might someday getcha, is quite a paranoid way to live.

It's over.

GAME OVER.

They have microphones on street lamps now, drones, every new device comes with cameras and microphones that can be secretly turned on without your knowledge right there in your home. The Government is collecting ALL data for EVERYTHING (just in case they need it someday, yah). They can track you via GPS, coming soon everyone will be chipped so they can track you anywhere, anytime.

And it's ALL because of 'safety'. WE ARE KEEPING YOU SAFE! THIS is why we NEED to know everything you do, everyone you talk to, everywhere you go.....

Let's face it. Technology has won and it is GAME OVER.

Carry on.

Well I'm very technical (I use Linux only on the desktop and admin my own dedicated servers) but I can see both sides.

For the common user it's nice not to have to worry as much about all the hassles related to data storage. The data can also easily be encrypted so the company which retains control theoretically cannot read it unless you make other mistakes.

The bigger issue I think is what happens when the unthinkable happens and the cloud goes down or even where something occurs and the data is lost forever? The way I see it is we will move to hybrid type filesystems which are automatically maintained. These filesystems will be a mix of cloud based and local storage. The local storage will act as an intelligent cache and a local backup for critical and frequently accessed files. You will be able to specify priority levels or have it done automatically and the system will make the decisions on what to keep copies of locally and what to keep fully in the cloud. This is the best of both worlds although it's not perfect.

I'm curious, who's the bad guy in this? the criminal who was lulled into a false sense of security and uploaded incriminating evidence to the cloud or the NSA and the notion that they have 100% access to evreyone's cloud and are waiting for everyone to be lulled into a false sense of security so they can send everyone to prison?

I rather be called old fashioned then adopting these 'safe' clouds

Regardless of what the media is spreading cloud storage had very little to do with this and the hack was not on the cloud itself.

This was a simple snoopy hack, performed at an awards show, party or celeb packed hotel, the impersonation of the iCloud part was a minor part of the whole thing.

You'd think people with that kind of money and representation would have at least one decent IT Security consultant around to protect them. Think again....

One simple setting, unchecking the join trusted networks option would have prevented this.

The nudie selfies did not get in the wild from a hack of iCloud is what is in the news.

Storing your nudie selfies on your smartphone then uploaded to a public cloud server service is real bright.

You know people use facebook and this surprises you??

I'm with you. I've been staying cloud-less, and can't see myself ever trusting it.

And for me, the big thing is not having data right there when I need it. I can't be transferring data back and forth through the internets constantly.

Cloud

When you get lots of band up and down, to do instant file exchange, all data will be with NSA

Only thing I ever put in the cloud is music as my external hard drive is good enough backup. I only use Facebook & Twitter for business use and not personal use as well. Family keeps bugging me to get personally social but I ain't got time for it and social networks just make ya less social.
