Brazil, Argentina, Germany and Spain are the favourites. Behind them there are 3 or 4 teams among, such as Belgium, Italy, France and Uruguay.

Only 32% of World Cup winners have been the host nation.

from memory, each world cup has been won by a nation from the same continent as where it's being held, except the last one.

host nations also have a statistical advantage iirc, and with brazil being only 1 of 8 teams to have ever won the world cup, are definitely a solid bet.

outside of that.. usual suspects really.. it's a short knockout (obviously) so any of the top 4 rankings of spain, germany, portugal, and brazil is where I'd be placing my money if I was going to have a bet on it. But I'm not, too many runners, too short a contest

Most bookies fancy Brazil or perhaps Argentina to win the 2014 World Cup, but according to EA Sports, Germany will win.

With the start of the world cup so close, this so-called "official" thread should never be off the main page.

If I find it on page 2+ again there's going to be trouble.

Does that surprise anybody? To me Germany always makes a strong showing. You can't go far wrong taking them if you're inclined to bet money. I was torn between them and Spain, and in the end went with Spain. As for Brazil, to be honest I've been getting a sense of over-ratedness from them in recent times. (last few world cups basically)

I know I know, a huge gasp of horror just went out from the masses. Well deal with it, or SUCK IT, your choice people. Brazil players tend to name themselves these great famous amazing single name names like they are gods or something. They take the field being heiled as if they are unbeatable gods. Then sure enough each one often has such an ego that they play like individuals rather than a team and they end up losing before the final.

There's been more arrogance than greatness there on that Brazil team. Just admit it.

Germany currently sits at number 2 in FIFA world rankings, just behind Spain. They have the strongest and most talented players in each position. I like their fluid attacking style. In last World Cup warmup they thrashes Armenia 6-1.

I hadn't even looked at any world rankings before making my desicion. I just know from watching past world cups that these countries we're talking about usually always have a strong showing at this tournament. 4 years ago, for example, I watched in the opening round and ended up choosing Spain based on their performance, but a lot of countries looked good -- Argentina, Italy, Germany, France, Portugal, etc.

Frankly any of a bunch of coutries could win it all.

It's a tossup, and all the official world rankings in the world won't amount to a hill of beans if a dark horse country steps up and beats everyone. As for my pick Spain, they usually play with a lot of heart, they play like a team, rather than a team of egos. Germany seems much the same, thus like I said you can't go far wrong with either of those teams from a betting standpoint.

i'd say Spain or Germany, because their squads are made of players that come from only a few different teams so they are used to playing together

brazil +croatia
spain +holland
greece based on 2004 performance and anyone else
england +italy
argentina +nigeria
germany +portugal
belgium + others has equal chances -south korea and russia 50/50

i think my analyses are kinda outdated but i know they are the same teams every time

FIFA rankings formula is really flawed. Each team is awarded three points for a win, even friendly games. For example, Italy won only once in last 6 friendly games but they don't give a shit.

About the winner, it's really hard to predict. I remember when weak Greece with their boring defence style won Euro cup 2004. I really fancy attacking football and Germany scored more goals than any other team during the European qualification phase. Also, they have reached the semi finals in the last 3 World Cups and the last 2 European Championships.

Also, that Euro cup winner thing is also overrated. Every FIFA world cup the comments are always "remember, they were the Euro cup winner"... but yet has that team ever won the World cup?

While it may be at least worth a mention to say such-and-such team won such-and-such title, in the end you and I both know it means absolutely nothing as far as who is going to win the WC.

And a lot of what FIFA does is flawed. :D

(eg: will we finally be seeing a coach's challenge, or sideline video reviews by refs? No? Didn't think so.)

With all the pressure on favored Brazil will they be able to handle it? Or will Croatia manage to steal a point?
