So it looks like some passenger were conscious the plane was in trouble.

I don't understand why this surprises anyone.

A plane is hit by a missile and goes down. It doesn't necessarily explode in mid air, but instead looses control and crashes to the ground. Most likely the first thing that happens is cabin pressure is lost, the second thing that happens is the masks drop. I would assume this would be automatic. I would also guess that it would be difficult to get a mask on while a plane is out of control and crashing to the ground.
