Documentary of the week...

I probably watch more docs than ANYONE I know. I love them. All subjects. People, history, sports etc. Anyway, just saw this on Netflix last night. It was really good. Fun, light, entertaining. Good for a weekend after a long hard weeks work. Enjoy....

are you referring to the one YOU posted?

Most people only like documentaries about subjects they are interested in. I find learning about ALL sorts of things fascinating, especially if it is a well done film. Most people are not that way.

What subjects do you like, I might have a few recommendations.

Looks good.

Along the same title lines have you seen "Who the Fu@K is Jackson Pollock?"

It is very good. It's a woman who buys a painting at garage sale that she thinks might be a Jackson Pollock.

You should watch it. Its not at ALL about the genocide. Its about the lives of these guys now as they make a campy film recreating the war. And mostly just about them now. Its a very soft , tame film. The only thing even close to violent is a couple scenes of them making the remake film, but most of it is campy and funny.

don't really care if you watch it or not, just saying if you are skipping it because you think its a doc about the genocide....its not.

Grape youre normally bass ackward on every subject but I have to say I agree with you on this one. FUCK the makers of Killing for Art - not funny at all especially to people like me who love and visit Indo. The killers needed to be offed at the end and that would have made the doc make some sense.

Art Fogel piece was a great education (although about 20 min too long) - thanks for the tip!

Without having seen it you shouldn't really comment. It is a remarkable film and it is amazing to see the people that were responsible for such atrocity coming to the realization of what they did through the process of the movie. It is a very unique movie and is one of the best anti-violence message of peace morality films I have seen in recent memory.

Except you neglect to acknowledge those killers are revered as heroes in the country you love to visit. They were protecting the world from Communism... (sound familiar?) like the saying goes, one man's freedom fighter is another man's terrorist. The movie does not condone anything about what those murderers did, and by the end, it uses the conceit of the movie within a movie to show them what monsters they were.

Does it matter IF some revere these monsters? The movie absolutely condones and glorifies the atrocities - it's lets these guys have a chance to clear their conscience and have their victims forgive and even thank them for their brutal murders - this doc is a classic example of "Just because you CAN do something (have fun with mass-murderers YAY!) doesn't mean you SHOULD do something...this doc, through it's fun "camp?" treatment of killers, and it's lighthearted style with a subject so deadly serious, makes the documentary itself a war crime...the film is an atrocity..I feel slimy for watching it.

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Chris Hedges called the film "an important exploration of the complex psychology of mass murderers" and wrote that "it is not the demonized, easily digestible caricature of a mass murderer that most disturbs us. It is the human being."

I highly doubt the filmmakers made the movie to glorify the Indonesian genocide and its' perpetrators. I haven't seen it but it looks like its' point is to show once again the 'banality of evil' - which is always scary and a good thing for people to see.

It's not a filmmaker or journalist's job to sacrifice their own lives to off the killers.

You appear to have zero clue what you are talking about. Saying it glorifies the monsters couldn't be farther from the truth. Saying that they finish with clear consciences couldn't be farther from the truth - with the exception of one individual who clearly has zero conscience at all in the first place. The "lightness" you refer to is how they see themselves and through the process of the film it is the device that brings them to realize the horror of what they did.

Therefore it does matter what the country thinks of them because it points out that it is all to easy to happen again.

You think it's OK to do campy comedy with mass-murderers? - we are supposed to give a flying FUCK that they are led to some realization of the horror of their past??? Like a 12 step program for homicidal maniacs? Maybe they are rehabbed now and they can come and chill in Brooklyn with the fans of this bitchin indie doc!

Maybe if the filmmakers somehow convinced these guys to hang themselves at the end would this doc have some redeeming value.

Guys to be fair you sound really ignorant. You obviously did not watch the documentary because it certainly doesn't glorify killing anyone.. in fact the message is the exact opposite, and done in a very clever way to come to that conclusion.. letting the killers end up admitting their guilt.

Sorry to slightly spoil it, but felt it was necessary because it's a HELL of a watch. Weird, intelligent, and wonderful.. with a good message.

Thanks for the recommendation ;)

Now for "Who the fuck is Fogel".. for me personally, that was boring as shit.

The more you say the more clear it becomes that you didn't even watch it.

Or you missed the point entirely, but either way, you are clueless.
