It's been 11 months for me - YAYYYYY!

I know a lot of you have gone a lot longer than I have - but it's been almost a full year and I haven't had even the hint of a cigarette!! They make me sick to even be around them - and I totally get it now - I used to think people who quit were being dramatic being around the smokers - but I TOTALLY get it - I don't hate on them, but the smell is REALLY rank to me now!!

I went for about 5 weeks on the whole Vaping (Ecigs) thing - and decided that wasn't any better - had cut out everything, nicotine and all of that - but still after 5 weeks of that, I even put that down - made no damn sense to give up one vice for another one just like it, not to me anyway. The habit part was my worst part and that wasn't helping that. lol

SOOO - I am so praying I am over it - with the stress I've had during this time, I think I can safely say I am - but I am not saying I will never, I will just say I hope I never, want another one again!!

October 21st will be a full year!!

I quit a few years ago. I hate cigarettes now. Unless I'm very drunk. But I don't wakeup the next morning Jonesing for a cigarette. It's hard not to look at young smokers and see them as anything but idiots. Mainly because I now know what it's like to be an idiot smoker who quit.

Congrats!!! It's been over 15 years for me now and I have to say the first year is by far the hardest . You are so right about the smell of smokers now . I have a nephew and niece both who smoke and the smell drives me crazy . Funny how when we smoked it did not bother us at all but after you stop it's a different story . Best of luck and I hope you don't gain as much weight as I did

people who get dramatic about other people's smoking are being dramatic. You'll have a better chance of longterm success if you don't worry about other people's smoke.

No I don't stress about it, I don't preach, give them nasty looks or even step away from them - I am quiet about it - but it's all I can do to be near it!! But I am not nasty with anyone about it. I don't drink either, but I don't freak on people that do that either - to each his own!!

I don't even see them as idiots, I was never an idiot just because I smoked - and I don't make that judgement - how can I when I did it for 30+ years myself and didn't want to be treated like that. I just can't stand the smell personally - even the thought of the smell - blah!!

I did, however, stop allowing smoking in my house, car and other areas of my own personal space, and that I am adamant about - but I don't get up and make damn scene and ask to be moved to another place on the planet simply because I quit! But as it pertains to my own space - and I am not a bitch - I just ask that they smoke outside or something - I am still trying to get the smell out of MY space now. lol

Having a thought like "I pray I'm over it" would worry me personally. 11 months is an ex smoker. You don't smoke anymore and other peoples smoke is offensive and nasty when you smell it, exactly as it should be. Congrats. Feb. 08 for me after 30+ yrs a smoker.

Try Formula 409 on your walls and anything else stained with decades of smoke. It really kicked ass for me. It works great on plastics especially.

good to hear then. quitting cigs is like quitting any other serious habit forming addicitions, success comes from internal sources, not external. Just like alcoholics who "try" to stop but get back on the bottle because someone within x # of feet of them had a cocktail.

not to mention how miserable those sorts of people are to be around.

Mine are getting fewer and further between for this - and last less and less time - I don't go walking out the front door like some barbarian over them now though. lmao

I can't wait to be on this ist saying it's been 10+ years for me - I'll get there - but those that have done it are an inspiration for sure.

Nahh, I just simply meant I won't say I will never, because I hate water too, but the instant I know I can't have it, I want it ore than anything - so I just never say never. lol

I'll try the 409 - we've used Lysol for the smell - and washed down walls and curtains and so on - and painted ceilings - and I guess it takes time since it didn't get there over night. lol

dynamo - I know exactly what you mean - I am the same way - I don't want them if I am near them, when I want one more or have in the past, is when I can't find one if I did - sometimes it's been just knowing they are there, like I just said up there - it's a matter of having a choice - and it's crazy when I see people looking at beer, whiskey or whatever like it's a bad lover -

I can't (won't) quit smoking yet, but yeah the drink... I know lots of alcoholics who freak if alcohol is near them. 'oh I have to avert my eyes from the drink aisle at the supermarket' etc - annoying as fuck.. let it go ffs

And well done Tam

ewww - I think my complexion has cleared a bit though - and I haven't gained any weight - in fact I think I've lost a little - but I've seen those commercials on tv and those are bad enough for me - lol

Jel - thanks dear - and I couldn't agree more - I don't intentionally walk into a place where cigarettes are, but I don't avoid them either - that's not helping anything at all, not for me anyway.

Congrats, and take heart Tam. I've known a large number of ex-smokers who say that it bothers them to be around other smokers. It's not about the smoke tempting them to start again, it's about the smoke flat-out bothering the shit out of them, as in the smell, breathing it in, the stink, etc.

I've never smoked, and in my younger days I worked in bars (back the days when smoking was allowed), was at umpteen zillion house parties where you could cut the smoke with a knife, none of which bothered me. But in my older years, like as I passed 40 or thereabouts, I slowly became less and less tolerant of it. Now I too really can't stand to be around those puffing clouds of smoke.

Sorry to those who take issue with this but the smell frankly does bother people and not for no reason, particularly ex-smokers, at least in my experience.

The issue is the people that use that as an excuse are 1) expecting others to alter their behavior to suit them, 2) looking to external locust for what it takes to quit and 3) very not fun to be around.

If something bothers someone or interferes with their agenda, then THEY need to change environments, not the people engaging in their chosen behavior.

heck, this happened to me here at the beach in another sort of situation, a surf buddy said if I start up my generator, he's gonna have to load his gear and go park somewhere else, I said pack your shit then, there's 3 miles of parking. And have a nice day there.

Yes, I know what you mean, I used to have to be in bars a lot when I managed my husband's band and had to either go with him to shows or book the shows - I was a smoker at the time and the smoke was nasty.

I don't expect anyone to change for me - and I won't and never have for anyone else - when I smoked, if someone didn't like it they could go fuck themselves - now that I am not a smoker, if I don't like it, then I can go fuck myself or move. lmao

My comments were for TAM you big buddinski :D

Okay here goes, point by point...

That's the point, it's not always an "excuse" as you seem to want to convince people it is. It is often simply a fact, the smoke does indeed physically bother a lot of people. There are asthmatics who are particularly bothered physically by it.

Quote:

Look I get it, you're a smoker that feels pushed around and bullied by all the non-smokers. So you're likely speaking from the perspective of situations that you've encountered. But in my view you're wrong. Not entirely, but at least in good part. I can think of tons of situations where non-smokers are basically forced to walk through clouds of smoke, such as when entering or exiting a public place (Like a hospital for example) where smokers are outside puffing away.

Fact is of the two sides, it is the smokers side that holds all the ill effects to health, thus I fully agree with those saying it is the smokers who need to change at least some of their ways.

I have no idea what that means.

and 3) very not fun to be around.
Don't know what you're talking about, I'm a riot to be around. I bet Tam is too, when she's not in Rude Bitch mode. :D But if someone wants to smoke they are free to step outside and puff to their hearts' content. (although I'm not all that crazy about finding butts in my flower beds or walkways either, just asking for a little basic consideration)

Quote:
If something bothers someone or interferes with their agenda, then THEY need to change environments, not the people engaging in their chosen behavior.
I disagree in this case. If the behavior in question was ONLY harmful to the person doing it and no one else I might agree, but since that's not the case with smoking the point doesn't wash. And the laws that have come into being over the past 15 years say the facts are with me.

Quote:
heck, this happened to me here at the beach in another sort of situation, a surf buddy said if I start up my generator, he's gonna have to load his gear and go park somewhere else, I said pack your shit then, there's 3 miles of parking. And have a nice day there.
By "start up my generator" you're meaning light up a smoke? Sorry, you lost me a bit. But if so I'm with you on that particular incident. Open air at the beach, sorry, unless they institute a "smoking allowed here" part of the beach in that instance you have a right to smoke, and he has a right to move somewhere else.

Really man, we don't need to debate the whole "right to smoke wherever the fuck I feel like it" argument here. All I'm saying is that a lot of people are bothered by cig smoke, particularly ex-smokers. It's a fact, no 'excuse' about it. My own mother was a smoker in her younger days yet for the past 40+ years she gets physically sick and dizzy if subjected to it.

And many of them do get up and walk away from it, thus "altering their behavior", but in some cases some bitching and complaining is warranted. You have to know yourself that there are a lot of inconsiderate smokers out there. I've known tons of those in my day.

I wasn't debating at all, I was clarifying. It's not about asthma or anything like that. It's an excuse often used by people claiming to be trying to quit smoking. They disallow people around them certain behaviors. N/m, you missed the point entirely.

As I mentioned previously, I stopped smoking ~20 years ago. so no need for the internet psych profile, you done goofed on it anyway.

I am quite the riot to be around and always have been - I don't party but love to be around people who are, because it's more fun to fuck with them - so I am a barrel of fun - STRAIGHT as hell!!

I get what's being said here though - I know people like that - people that quit and then want to dictate to others because they quit that now somehow they are somehow better than those that haven't quit or don't wish to - I am all about "to each his own" and you can smoke all you damn well please - I just don't have to stand there and suck it in - and not because I don't like you - I am just more sensitive to it now than I was - but I don't judge those that do it - And no, I don't get up and get nasty and rude and run the other way - I either deal with it or quietly move a little distance the other direction so I am not down wind of it. lol

CDSmith - I love you - so you can come sit by me and we'll choke together - lmao

Just making a judgement call based on your internet comments- it sure seems like you are going in the right direction for making this a real deal quit smoking, keep it up and before you know it, it won't matter how long ago you quit.

I didn't start out that way - I put those down and picked up those e-cigs with nicotine and was sucking on those things more than when I was smoking - and then it hit me one day about a week or two into it that nothing was really different - took out the nicotine for a couple of weeks and then put them all down and now I have like $200 worth of those damn batteries and shit laying around here -

with me, it was the habit - some it's the nicotine - but with me it was the fidget and habit and I think that's why it really isn't bothering me -

What is a complete shock to me, my husband smoked at least double what I ever did and he put them down before I did - he heard me struggling to sleep without coughing (which was my heart mostly but smoking was making it worse) and he just laid them down and said he quit - that shocked and still shocks everyone - I think including him some days, but he had less of a tough time than ANYONE thought he would and he isn't even phased by it at all.

Quit a more than 2 pack a day (Newport 100's) habit more than 30 years ago.

Thank God.

My stepson smokes and it drives me nuts.

I give you credit for that. I discriminate against smokers at both work and play.

Horse? If you're gonna complain about the smell of smokers then you should not be telling others to not complain about your complaining. Again though, if I'm next to someone who stinks, smokes, whistles, squirms, makes clucking noises, etc., I move.

Smoked 35 years - quit last November and switched to vaping.

Haven't had a single cig since the day I bought the vape kit.

Feels much better now. The cough is gone. Chest has cleared up and I find I have more endurance on the mountain bike and hiking trails.

Oh lord, I know - I turned to my husband not long after we quit and we were near a smoker - and I asked him if I ever smelled like that and he sheepishly said yes, because I know he didn't want to hurt my feelings - but wow!! I was so embarrassed!

Oh don't get me wrong - interior thoughts are there, they just don't come out of my mouth. lol

I remember how I felt when people did it to me and how many people I told to get up and go the hell away when I was seated first and they landed their asses in a smoking section when they didn't smoke - that used to make me crazy - but now, I just asked to be seated in a no smoking section - BUT most places are smoke free these days, so we don't have the same issues as other people who quit used to. I try and be mindful as long as others are, but let them get nasty or rude with me and it's not so quiet. lmao

Keep up the good work! I know a lot of friends (8 out of 10) that eventually give in and start smoking again. If you can do 4+ years you can do 10+ etc.

Ive quit a lot of things my nigga. But these cigs got me in a choke hold right now. Im not the typical smoker tho. Ive quit once before a long ass time ago when I was 18 after smokin for like 6 months. Shit was just wack to me. Then I didn't hit another cig till I was 30, I used them to help me quit 3 other things cold turkey. I figured if I can swap 3 addictions for 1, I'd be aight... and I thought I'd be able to drop these shits like I did before, nah mean? But now a year later I hate these shits but I keep tokin. Im smokin one right now and I hate it. But I aint tryin to start another addiction to help me stop this last one I have left. Bout to go the ecig route.

One word of advice, when you decide to go the ecig route - don't go get a bunch of tobacco flavored juices for them, get something you enjoy - fruits - or anything else - if you try the tobacco flavors and expect it to taste like a real cigarette, it isn't going to. I tried that route a few times before I was successful and this is the best way I made it thru. There are so many flavors out there now and it won't give you the idea in your head that this is going to be a real cigarette - s it'll be easier on you.
