Just ate tuna in a can that "expired" Jul 23, 2011

Tasted fine. So much for expiration dates.

They've tested canned goods from shipwrecks and places over 100 years old and they are still safe. Won't be much flavour / texture nutrition left though.

It depends. We have around here "Best before" and "Expiration date". First one is fine after that date, second one depends a lot (I might skip year old raw meat ). In canned food there usually reads "Best before", so it's edible after that, but taste might not be as good, etc.

Risk getting sick for a $1 can of tuna? If the can was intact it was OK probably.

By the way, don't try this with vacuum packed food, or you will soon have botulinum in other places than in the face.

the expiration date is the date that the company stops guranteeing the freshness.

You will never in your life open a can of raw meat because there is no such thing.

I didn't mean canned, just somehow packed raw meat with expiration date label.

And there is actually all kinds of raw stuff canned but in preservative (like in oil or pickled). Most common canned raw food would be fish. Also salami is raw, to mention other raw foods in general. By raw I mean "not cooked".

Freeze it air tight and there won't be much freezer burn. I just recently ate more than 6 years old rabbit (not the rabbit's age ).

Shipwrecks are usually somewhere cold and dark and ideal for long term storage.
