The Expendables 3 - Leaked - Over 1 Million Downloads

I thought Lions Gate was just flexing when it said it was going after the people that leaked the movie, but shit just got real. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security?s Immigration and Customs Enforcement began investigating the case after Lions Gate sought the aid of law-enforcement agencies in locating the film?s pirates. OH SHIT! Not ICE!

I'm not sure what Immigration and Customs has to do with pirating a movie, but oh well.

http://www.ibtimes.com/expendables-3...-sites-1646940

By the way, we watched it last night. It was DVD quality but the movie pretty much sucked ass. The only thing it did was make me want to fuck Ronda Rousey even more. But that's it.

My guess is this one was "leaked" by someone inside the studio. They know they're going to take a bath on the movie (it really does suck). Why not get some exposure from it, and on top of that, now you can go after the "pirates" with the assistance of the an official law enforcement agency. Win win for Lions Gate if you ask me.

P.S. I think it's fucking hilarious that the movie hasn't even been released but people are starting to review it on Rotten Tomatoes.

Dude...I don't know where you get your ideas on how a movie is going to do at the box office. But you are way off about them "taking a bath"

They are making money hand over fist with this series of movies. And they will again. Doesn't matter what you think or movie critics think. This movie is gonna be number one whether it sucks or doesn't suck.

We all like to cheer for our heroes from our childhood.

That is the draw of the movie. Nobody expects it to win an Academy Award or anything. heh-heh

Maybe that's just my thought because I saw the movie and know it's going to get lambasted by the critics when they are able to screen it. It may not take a "bath" as I stated, but it's certainly not a good flick.

************SPOILER ALERT --- DON'T READ IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT!**************

I did laugh my ass off when they asked Wesley Snipes why he was locked up and he answers, "tax evasion". I hate that every older action star continue to use their own, or other people's catch phrases. Yeah, we get it Arnold. Get to the choppah! You'll be back. Etc, etc, etc....

This was supposed to be the last installment so Sly Stallone is setting it up for a younger group of "Expendables" to take over the franchise. That's why none of the main (older) characters are even in this movie for any substantial time. It looks like the studio went cheap on this one.

Yeah...it's definitely not gonna have great acting or great dialogue.

But I still think it'll be number one. Just because all the guys like me who were young men in the 1980's will be taking their kids to see the action heroes from their own youth.

This will be a "man's" movie as opposed to a "chick flick".

My guess is that this will be the one that guys make a "deal" with their wives/girlfriends that goes something like this: "If you'll go see The Expendables 3 with me...I promise to go see that love story/tearjerker chick flick with you next week"

And after the movie the guy will be excitedly telling his woman how "great" the movie was and she will be rolling her eyes.

That scenario just described me when the movie comes out.

With $100 million budget on each movie, that revenue doesn't count as "hand over fist". It's around breaking evening when you count in marketing and distribution costs. Even though there's a worldwide gross, the main number that's counted is the domestic gross -- and they didn't do too well in that area.

By the way, I love these movies and will be there opening weekend.

bronco67, I just looked up the domestic for the first one...it was $103,068,524 for domestic box office.
And looks like the budget was $80,000,000.
With a worldwide box office of $274,470,394 that's what I would call making money "hand over fist" for sure.

And why would you think the "main" number is domestic? The money spends just as good from domestic and international doesn't it?
Anyway...it was the number one movie at the box office when it came out.

The second one did even bigger numbers:
The budget for "2" was $100.000,000 so it cost $20,000,000 more to make.
But it ended up making $305,428,192 worldwide so it made more money than the first one did.

I don't know man...those are big numbers in my mind.
Not "Spiderman" type numbers. But pretty damn good money for a movie of mindless action and fun.

It's not considered successful. Look into how box office success is gauged. Maybe the second one could be considered much better money-wise, but there's a lot more that goes into the movies' cost besides the raw budget you see.

This is an extreme example, but the first Paranormal Activity cost 15 grand to make and grossed $193 million worldwide. That's hand over fist.

If a movie cost 30 million to make, and made Expendables size box office, that's very successful.

I guess it's all about our own definitions of what constitutes a major success. I don't really care how much they make, because I like the Expendables movies no matter what. But they're not "successful" by most Hollywood yardsticks. This subject is something I've been paying attention to for a long time as a movie buff. A movie has to gross 3 to 4 times it's budget to be considered a money maker. DVD can help later.

Only on GFY where people make movies for a few grand to profit a dozen grand could someone think that spending a hundred million on a single movie to make three hundred million dollars was an abject failure, lol.

I didn't admit shit. I went to a friends house who purchased a bootleg copy of it on DVD. Do you live in a big city? If so, then you'll know that there are bootleg copies of movies and video games for sale almost everywhere.

If it makes you feel any better, I'll go on Fandango and buy a ticket but never go.

Reminds me of when I used to watch that show Cops.

Somebody would get pulled over, and the cops the find drugs in their car or in their pockets. And they always say, "That aint none of mine!"

Well that makes it ok then! Your friend purchased a bootleg copy.

Those numbers also don't include all the pay per view, pay per download and dvd sales. DVD and Blu Ray along, according to this site, tack on another $32 million. That money is almost all profit. I don't know how it did in pay per view and online streaming buys, but I wouldn't be shocked to see that bring in another $10-$15 million.

That same site says the first Expendables movies did about $78 million in DVD and Blu Ray sales alone.

Sounds like pretty good money to me.

And yes sorry Rob, but even if you watched it at a friends house, you're not really off the hook. You contributed to the theft and loss of profits that are deserved by the movie makers.

You can't hate tube sites for displaying copyright adult content, and then watch an illegally obtained hollywood movie, IMO.

OK, I really didn't watch the movie. I was just saying that to boost my board cred. I really went into the office and prepared the spreadsheet for my daughter's Girl Scout cookie drive next year and updated my Meals on Wheels schedule. I found some free time where I can make a couple extra stops this week. By the time I came back from giving blood, it was over and my friends said it was a horrible movie.

I'm glad I didn't take any part in their criminal enterprise of watching bootleg movies. They should all be ashamed of themselves and send a check or money order made out to Lions Gate Films for $14. The amount they STOLE from that honest, hard working studio. They have kids to feed for Christ's sake!

I think the first one was decent since the cast was so amazing, watched about 15 minutes of the second and didn't want to see more of that rubbish. This franchise is a disaster as far as good movies go but in the end it makes some money for them.

Where are they getting these download stats from off of torrent sites? Those sound like really bad estimates, regardless that movie is still gonna make a ton of money.

I enjoyed that movie a lot, not because it was great but because it was horrible. And it knows it's horrible. It's not trying to be anything else and its just a glorious train wreck of easter eggs, inside jokes, horrible acting, bad physics, completely unrealistic fighting and geriatric former action stars with more botox than brain cells hobbling around like retirement home alumni lining up for medication, but with guns.

Schwarzenegger reprises his "GET TO THE CHOPPAH" line twice in case you miss it the first time. Hilarious.

watched the 2nd one last night thanks to this thread... made it to 1:09 of 1:42... I couldn't stomach any more of the 'acting'. Jason statham has to be the worst actor ever, and I don't remember dolph being such a shit actor, maybe he was all along though.

Truly awful, in there amongst the 5 worst films I've ever seen - it's not often at all I can't sit through a whole movie - probably the 3rd time it's ever happened, though I've gone with 5 to err on the side of caution.

Even with the piracy and tube site issues, the porn content producers will earn a hell of a lot of money.

Most pirated movies of all time.

1. Avatar (most pirated movie EVER)
2. The Dark Knight
3. Transformers
4. Inception
5. The Hangover

reference: http://www.cnbc.com/id/48768803/page/1

Total world wide gross for those movies.

1. Avatar - $2,788 Billion (highest worldwide gross of ANY MOVIE in history)
2. The Dark Knight - $1,004 Billion
3. Transformers - $709.7 Million
4. Inception - $825.5 Million
5. The Hangover - $467.5 Million

The people who pirate movies are the ones that would not go to the movies in the first place. Just like the people who watch "tube porn" are the ones that will probably never sign up for a pay site. As they say, adapt or die. We live in the information age where people are going to stretch the limits of legalities.

So if other people steal shit, it's ok for you to do it?

This is what is wrong with this (and other) industries. It's full of idiots and thieves.

Yes, if you are downloading movies, videos, games, music, software etc that you fucking know someone else invested their time and money in, to make a profit off of their work (or art), then you're just as much of a thief as the the guy that goes into Best Buy and stuffs a videogame down his pants and walks out the door.

But hey, who is going to catch you? Apparently it's ok to be a piece of shit when nobody is gonna see.

You need to learn about how Hollywood handles accounting and marketing.

Nobody expects it to win an Academy Award or anything. heh-heh
I haven't seen 1 or 2. Watching a bunch of old guys try and look tough seems a bit over the top for a good time.

A film needs to double production costs to breakeven. You guys are forgetting that they don't get 100% of the ticket price.

I'm totally ignorant of that.

But comparing the numbers of other big films (not the blockbusters)...and knowing that those "Expendable" films were number one at the box office when they came out...I'm theorizing that they made damn good money (also the fact that they have now made a third one...I assume the studio would have stopped after the first one if it hadn't been a big money maker).

I saw that the Spiderman movies for instance made about twice as much as the Expendables. But that's a mega-blockbuster.

The Expendables is never gonna be that. But by that measure...neither are 99% of the movies released.

I'm just saying that when you make a movie for $80 million and it makes $274,470,394 I call that "damn good".

But I definitely bow to your knowledge of how those numbers come out. I don't have a clue.

But if that's not good, then I guess all the movies that were not number one this week are REALLY bad financially.

How the heck does Hollywood even stay in business if they can't profit off of those numbers?

Is everything just riding on the one or two super-gigantic blockbusters each year?

It makes you wonder why they spend $150 million(or more) on a movie when it needs to make 3 times that amount to be considered a major moneymaker. Not every movie can be The Avengers or Titanic. Most movies that cost that much tank by Hollywood accounting standards.

Something like Paranormal Activity, that costs a few grand to make, and ends up making more money than the latest Tom Cruise movie --- that's a real profit.

That makes sense. Having said that...I really enjoyed the last Tom Cruise movie.

That same site says the first Expendables movies did about $78 million in DVD and Blu Ray sales alone.

Sounds like pretty good money to me.
Plus there's also different terms for theater licensing when it comes to different movies.

I can imagine that to land "Expendables" license for your theater - it won't make you practically no money from the tickets, unless you sell out say 75 - 90 pct. of the seats for several days in a row.

You will break even and make profit on selling popcorn, fan ware etc. but you won't neccessarily make the licensing fee back. So these movies that have a "blockbuster" potential and a proven track of selling-out may even get a better profit margin when it comes to theater licensing.

Expendables are a safe bet and they know what they're doing, since most of the these days CGI fake action flicks just can't impress the guys that were raised in the golden era of action movies.

I was hoping it would make more money. They called it a bomb because it made 35 mil opening weekend, and so far its made 95 mil domestically. But international gross is around 265 mil, so that puts it over 360 million worldwide. Sounds good, but the movie cost around 180 million to make, so I guess it would be called break even.

It really is a shame that so much love, art and sweat is put into something like Edge of Tomorrow and it can't be called a success for making more than a quarter billion dollars.

Bruce Willis lack of involvement was cited as a disagreement over money, with production sources indicating that Willis was offered $3 million for four days of shooting in Bulgaria, but Willis wanted $4 million.
