Duke Energy caught dumping coal ash directly into river 61 million gallons

This is why we don't need a EPA am I right? Corporations will do the right thing....

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/duke-ene...egulators-say/

Duke Energy has been pumping coal ash for the last year, perhaps longer directly into Fear River in N.C. This is the 8th time in less than a month that Duke has been cited for environmental regulations. In Febuary one of their trains derailed and spilled tens of thousands of gallons of coal ash into Dan River between VA and NC.

People on the West coast of FL might remember Duke energy as being the company whom was allowed to charge their customers for a new power plant before it was built but never built it, instead pocketing over $1.5 billion of their customers money.

That baseless rate increase you mentioned in West FL was a pretty hefty one too.

And now they'll need to raise their rates yet again to buy themselves out of this mess

I've been reading about this. Duke Energy are real fucking bastards.

Get this:

The president of Duke Energy used to be Pat McCrory. This prick received a presidential appointment by Dubya (surprise surprise) and then become a REPUBLICAN Govenor of North Carolina.

Duke Energy has been a major polluter in North Carolina and been sued many times by environmental groups. So what happens? The state of North Carolina (under Pat McCrory) takes over the lawsuit, and slaps Duke energy with a $99k fine only, without any requirement to clean up the shit they created.

Real, Fucking Bastards. I don't know how anyone could take something as beautiful as lakes and rivers and then completely destroy them again and again without even giving a single fuck. Want to know more? Google Duke Energy, Pat McCrory.

One again : Republicans in office are fucking bastards. Why anyone could vote for pieces of shit like him and other republicans is a mystery to me. Few to none have proven they care about anything else than Oil and Coal money, regardless of the cost to nature, health and life.

That's the Cape Fear river. As to the Dan River incident, I don't know anything about a train, but there has been news about a faulty pipe and an earthen dam for a holding pond collapsing, resulting in tons of the waste being spilled into the Dan River over a period of time.

Unfortunately, NC Governor McCrory worked for Duke Energy and one of his first orders of business upon taking office was to approve rate hikes. As to the current mess, so far it looks as if they are being treated with kid gloves. It will be interesting to see who ends up paying for their mess. My guess is it will be passed along to the customers when they seek further rate hikes in 2015.

TurboAngel probably knows more, as the Dan River isn't too far from her (they are a her I think lol).

Maybe it wasn't the train at Dan River then, but I do know they recently spilled a shitload of coal ash due to a train derailment. Now admittedly I can give a bit of tolerance due to a train derailment unless it was negligence in someway. However if they were polluting that river as well then these guys are fucking intolerable and need to be dealt with,

They also have a levee issue at the Cape Fear plant that is leaking and is also a separate issue from this dumping. These guys are beyond criminal in my opinion and I wouldn't have a second thought about a public flogging of their corporate decision makers.

I've traveled a lot of this country and it pisses me off to no end to see water ways, lakes and the ocean polluted. New England is one of the worst where pollution from the 50s still is present in the lakes, rivers and streams. There is still sediment in most of the rivers left from pollution done 40 to 50 years ago. In so e places you can pick up rocks that will be stained black on the top side and perfectly clean on the bottom where if was protected from the shit dumped in the rivers.

It's fucking sickening what has been done in places throughout this country.

Well they did that about 60 miles from where I live. Now we as customers are going to have to pay to fix it. I'm sure there's more to it than they are letting on.

Yes. They loaned the DNC $10M, but then turned it into a donation when the DNC did not pay it back, turning it into a tax deductible business expense.

You are more right than you know. Those pricks are trying to pass the cost of the clean-up, to the CUSTOMERS of Duke Energy.

Un fucking real.

No way in hell would I be their customer. If I had to live in a area they provided power I'd go off grid with solar.

My dad has Duke where he lives in FL and his bill hit $300 this year for heat in fucking FL. My highest bill this winter, also in FL was $130 with FPL.

SOP to contribute to both parties. Call it a red herring.

We all know the one party that pretends that government does not mean the same thing as regulation. They pretend that if every regulation and tax was lifted, the country would flourish and life would reward everyone magically. The last president of that party lifted whole parts of the clean air act rather than lose in court over and over again. You only get zero guesses because guessing isn't required, lol.

Companies in this position make sure to cover their bases on both sides of the field, there is no question about that. Same way with most very large corporate entities even oil companies give money to the Democrats and banking companies give money to the Republicans. Very few groups are very exclusive when it comes to making sure they have covered their bases whomever is in power.

So, Duke Energy is A-OK in your books?

You missed the point. The company pollutes like crazy. The president of that company became governor of the state. He takes the lawsuits by environmental groups away from them and "settles" each for a measly $99k (peanuts to Duke energy), doesn't make them clean up their mess, doesn't make them pay to clean it up. Sure there are some democrats who are real jerks but nothing compares to the total damage republicans in office seem to be creating.

Or, you know what might work? Make him take his kid fishing on a lake or river that he and his company have poisoned. Let him explain to his kid why a once beautiful area of water and nature now smells so bad it makes him choke. Let him explain why all fish, turtles, otters, frogs, birds and other wildlife that used to depend on those bodies of water are now dead, and why the water looks so thick and teal-colored.

How anyone from a basic part-time worker to a big shot CEO can do this is beyond me.

No you missed the point. Democrats get just as much money and you'd still vote for them its all good. Republicans on the other hand are total scum!

Heres your boy with the previous CEO of Duke.
I know there appears to be either incorrect date or it should say Former President Clinton. It still makes the point.

Coal ash ? the waste material left after coal is burned ? contains arsenic, mercury, lead, and over a dozen other heavy metals, many of them toxic. And disposal of the growing mounds of coal ash is creating grave risks to human health.

Toxic constituents of coal ash are blowing, spilling and leaching (dissolving and percolating) from storage units into air, land and human drinking water, posing an acute risk of cancer and neurological effects as well as many other negative health impacts: heart damage, lung disease, kidney disease, reproductive problems, gastrointestinal illness, birth defects, and impaired bone growth in children.

This ash, which is generated at coal-fired power plants across the country, is the second-largest industrial waste stream in the country.

It will never happen in a million years as long as all these guys get fat legal bribes from special interest and big corporations. The only way any real reform would happen, is by overthrowing the govt and starting and of course that's not a viable solution and would make bribery/corruption even worse.

Apparently DENR has withdrawn that 99K settlement offer and are now looking at a suit.

It's really a state by state thing with stuff like this. Some states will turn a blind eye to this kind of shit like NC has in the past. Then other states will hound the hell out of them but will allow other types of shit pass by with no concern.

Un fucking real.
Here in NC we have no choice. They were Duke Power until 4 months ago or so when they merged with another company that when the became Duke Energy. After the marge we got a rate increase.

Last year in January my bill was $125 this pat January it was $225. I live in the same place only thing different was there was a few really cold days this year.

it's not, drywall companies have been using recycled coal ash in their mixtures for decades now. Far cheaper than gypsum too.

You are misinformed. Coal ash can be very toxic, containing a slew of heavy metals (arsenic, mercury, lead, etc). Coal Ash is the collective term given to the byproducts of the combustion of coal. It can be divided into fly ash (AKA flue ash) - fine particulate residue, and bottom ash - the heavier byproduct that does not escape up the flue.

Apparently, degree of toxicity is largely dependent on the coal source - which makes sense.

While the byproducts can be used for industrial purposes, such as synthetic gypsum as you mentioned and concrete, thereby putting it to somewhat safer use than say a landfill where it can leach into groundwater, it may still present risks.

Here's a CNN article that does a pretty fair job of presenting both sides: http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/03/20/r...ml?eref=rss_us

No, you missed the point. The republican governor, who just also happened to be an ex president of Duke Energy, is preventing Duke energy from losing anything to lawsuits, and letting them get away with not cleaning up their mess.

FYI: I'm not sure where that ex-president of Duke Energy thing started, but it has never been publicly revealed in what capacity he worked for them, just that he did. He remains tight-lipped about it.
