David Letterman retiring
So after long years, Letterman announced during taping today that he would retire. Kind of a sad thing for fans, so what's the speculation on a replacement?
One funny thing already is the attribution on this CNN video of the announcement http://www.cnn.com/video/data/2.0/vi...html?hpt=hp_t2 Way to go, CNN. Always on top.

That's how I felt about mister leno.. twice!
For those who don't want to deal with watching a short clip on CNN to get the joke, CNN attributed the clip to: "The Tonight Show with David Letterman/CBS/Worldwidepants"

Always liked Letterman, and even attended his show once when I was in NYC (Hilary Swank, and Mike & Mike of ESPN were the guests).
I don't watch late night talk shows much anymore, although I peek in on Jimmy Fallon from time to time, and I've enjoyed off-the-wall Craig Ferguson the most ever since Conan moved to TNT. I would like to see Jon Stewart get the gig, or perhaps Carson Daily if he bails NBC (doubt it), but I would be okay with Craig Ferguson or Conan (dark horse pick = Keith Olbermann). Thanks Dave! Good riddance. He's a befuddled old codger who is the worst interviewer in late night. Honestly most late night talk shows suck overall, but Letterman's show is especially awful.
I occasionally record an episode on my DVR of any of the talk shows if there is a guest I might like and when I saw Letterman "interview" the three surviving members of Led Zeppelin not too long ago it was perhaps the most superficial and awkward tv appearance ever with absolutely no information to be gleaned.

I think he's one of the most boring hosts out there. His schtick is awful.
I'm finally able to tolerate NBC late night since Jay is gone. Jimmy can be kind of goofy but his show has a fun vibe. Seth is finding his groove, but the banter with Fred Armisen is painfully boring. It would've been nice to see Conan remain on network TV. TBS seems to be treating him well, but it would've been great to see him replace Letterman. Conan and Craig would have been a great late night pair. I have no clue who they could get to replace Letterman. Could Craig do the job? I think he enjoys his own format. It'd be odd to see him in a more serious format.

The most influential comedian of the past 35 years - there's not a comedian, talk show host, weatherman, anybody who thinks they're funny that isn't doing 'Letterman' to some degree, he was the master of irony when it didn't exist on television. He mocked show business' phoniness and himself. If you went to college/university in the 80's you were watching Letterman after Johnny Carson. It was like they gave a talk show to an overaged frat boy. He was Carson's boy, Johnny loved him.
I was so sad when he left NBC to go to CBS, watched one show and could see it would never be the same. I felt the same way when Howard Stern left WXRK for satellite radio. Those are my two comedy gods, Dave and Howard, Stern was unknown outside NYC/Philly until Dave started inviting him on Late Night and exposed him to all of North America. They both used everyday oddball people and turned them into oddball semi celebrities. Man I feel old.

32 years and people still watch him everyday. That alone is the champion~ whether he is funny or not or you like him or not. Television Demands him and if his ratings is worthless then he would be gone years ago.

Yup, he had a good run. Craig Ferguson would most probably get the gig. Ferguson's show is owned by World Wide Pants, so that should be a no-brainer.
The best of Letterman was when Drew Barrymore flashed him.

I never understood why Letterman was so popular. Never got his sense of humour.
Now even today, I don't get why the audience laughs at him and I pondered once that there was a possibility that Americans are not very bright and that's why they accepted him. On the other hand, Jay Leno made me laugh on the odd occasion. |

Here comes Louis CK (from his show)!
I loved Letterman in the 80s and early 90s, but he stagnated. As a high schooler and college kid, I often watched Carson/Letterman when possible. I think Letterman went into cruise control after losing The Tonight Show gig to Leno. Bad monologues, lame top 10 lists, horrible banter with Paul Shaffer, mediocre interviews, occasional funny bits. But he was an institution, and it will be a bit said when he finally retires.
