You Get These Unsolicted GoDaddy Customer Service Phonecalls?

I don't know whether to be weirded out or impressed. This one came last night.

I get them too. One time it was an aggressive sales guy. I asked him if this were a sales call and he said "no" then he proceeded to try to upsell me all sorts of crap in between trying to verify my information. I told him I was very busy and did this really need to be done. He said, yes but you can call us back later here is the number. I never called back. Nothing ever happened. Very lame to waste my time.

the benefits of not living in the US - calling abroad in foreign languages they obviously avoid

I no longer answer calls from area code 480 because of Godaddy telemarketing. The one time I did answer, some guy wanted to become my Customer Development Team Advisor. He wanted to advise me I had some domains expiring very soon. These were porno domain names. So I made him tell me specifically which ones. I could tell he was trying to maintain his professional composure or maybe he was trying to maintain an erection.

Exactly as soon as I see the area code I don't answer it but they are getting smart, I got a call from a 702 area code, ignored it and guess what, Godaddy left me a voicemail.

I get them. They are generally nice and only offer me services if I choose to hear about them. Not many companies reach out like that anymore.

don't mind at all

I don't mind the GD calls.

When they call to remind me about expiring domains I view it;
a) as good customer service
b) as good customer retention efforts on their part

Any "up-sells" are usually "soft sells" presented as suggestions.
Plain and simple, it's good marketing to your existing client base.

Program owners and service providers can learn much from the GD approach. If you're a "mud on the wall" porn slinger then this method of marketing is probably above your head.

Being proactive? - usually wins
Being reactive? - minimal results

Do you take a similar approach to your customer base?
If not, why not?

Customer acquisition is the big expense.
Customer retention is much easier and less costly.

I don't disagree with what you are saying. However, the way that they can afford to do this marketing is at the expense of their customers literally. As an example, their dotcom domain renewals are completely overblown to the domain registrar marketplace, $14.99 for one year. Their privacy is $9.99 per domain.

Compared to Namecheap, Namesilo, you won't have to pay over $10 - $11 for something you now have to pay $25 at GD. There are no more renewal coupons to bring your cost down to reasonable. There is only a domain club that gives you lame benefits like free parking, when GD is known to take the canonical URL of your domain and park it anyway. The domain club isn't free like Namecheap's 100 domain owner Gold Deal. But joining it will drop your dotcom renewal, as an example, to $8.29, but it won't drop your privacy one cent, so even as a member, you are still paying over $18 for a product that is available nearly 50% less elsewhere.

I have been transferring my domains away from GD and over to a much lower priced registrar. My domains that remain at GD are ones that I'm selling (they do excel at ease of transfer) or that I'm letting expire.

Not once, have I ever had a sales call from GD...but, it is possible that because I have an Exec Account Rep, they don't do that. Who knows...but I haven't ever gotten a call.
Glad, actually.

Yeah, I guess that is why our calls never come off as "sales calls."

All of you whining about getting phone calls from GoDaddy should just opt out of it and whatever else you don't want. You can disable phone calls, text messaging, email and US mail.

GoDaddy Account Settings >> Contact Preferences

That's why I said I don't know whether to be weirded out or impressed. The GoDaddy reps who call have all been very pleasant and no hard sell. This one told me about a domain expiring in August, I asked which one, she told me and I told her thanks for the reminder and that I will be renewing that domain. She replied 'Let's do it now then', I said I'll do it online myself and she didn't put up a protest.

I get them... as a Domain club member, I don't mind the reminder. I have a ton of domains and have lost a few over on namecheap because there email system wasn't working at the time. So i'm more than happy to have Go Daddy call me and remind me.
