Right but "stop" and "stop you ran over a woman" are two different things that the guy might react in two different ways to. If they are just yelling stop and he's 100m from the hotel he'll just drive to the hotel.

Trust me... If you're in a bus that just ran over a girl on a bicycle you don't just say 'stop'.. Geesh... Why am I even replying to this!

Very sad indeed. My partner used to be a teacher and one of her pupils was killed in very similar circumstances. The poor girl became entangled in between the axle of the vehicle and she was virtually cut in two. She died very slowly over several hours with her parents by her side, all the doctors could do was sedate her and deal with the pain. The police closed the road and erected screens around the vehicle until she was gone and they were able to cut her body from the wreckage. We sometimes see her parents, I cannot imagine what their lives are like.
This is a minor side note, and it would not have made any difference in this case, but I travel to Amsterdam regularly and the have often wondered why you never see a cyclist wearing a helmet. I also spent time this summer on a farm with dutch friends who breed horses, and again they never wear any protective head gear when they ride. Not even when they are teaching young children to ride.

Every stables in the Netherlands that aren't complete amateurs will demand you wear a cap when riding a horse. Every single one. If your friends don't demand that it's irresponsoble and stupid. Bikes are a different story though. A bike is no horse. It's more predictable than a horse. It's also not 6 feet high. And it's a lot slower. Everybody in the Netherlands has a bike. Millions of people ride their bikes and still deadly accident are rare. Every one is one too many, but a helmet wouldn't have prevented this accident. Simple enough. If you want to prevent stuff like this you should prohibit touring cars.... Or bicycles... But helmets are not doing any good. If you're on a race bicycle a helmet is very common. But they are much faster and the risk of falling is much bigger. That's why people on those bikes wear a helmet in the Netherlands. All of them. But a regular bicycle doesn't go much faster than about 20 km/h, about 12 mph. People can run that fast. So I guess everybody has to wear a helmet? There are bike lanes everywhere in the Netherlands. They are highly protected by law: if you hit a bicycle here you have to prove it wasn't your fault to be innocent instead of the other way around. Cars and bicycles don't have to mix...
What happened in Amsterdam was a rare unfortunate accident... It was horrible to see, the people in that bus must have been shocked by the whole occurrence. Image the parents of the girl... No time to say goodbye, just a knock on the door and a message your 20 year old daughter died in a traffic accident. Terrible. |

Funny you should post that, was hoping someone would post something similar
My neighbor in USA had a biking accident, and the same type of "specialist said that he would have been killed if he was not wearing a helmet. I see this same guy every year running races and biking (with helmet of course) . For anyone that would say no point wearing a helmet, the logic behind that saying would kill any credibility that doctor/specialist would ever have, it's unlogical lol. Don't you think?

Anyways, I heard the stories and saw the impact it had on people. I'm only too glad that I decided to go home and try to get a good nights sleep vs. go to that party.

I remember that debate, it's fucking lame. It's the same as saying you should not make highways safer because it makes people drive faster.

Sorry I must've been in a weird mood that day I posted that LOL
But anyways, my point being that safer to have helmet then to not. Sure that girl probably would have died with or without, but generally speaking, helmet better than none, same in war, same in sports, same for cycling.

When I was in China, I spent some time on a tour bus and those guys have very little room to maneuver with all the scooters and bicycles running around them. It's all about paying attention. The girl wasn't on the bike lane and the bus driver was having an argument with a taxi? Very sad!!!

I used to think the same thing.
Over here it's common to wear cheap plastic helmets on our motorbikes that cost around $4. I always laughed and said the same thing, what good would those crappy things do? Then I got hit my a speeding car while wearing one of those cheap helmets. After literally breaking the windshield with my head, I then bounced down the street hitting my head multiple times, digging very deep gouges into the plastic. I don't actually know how many times I flipped and hit my head, but probably 5 or 6. To my surprise, I didn't even get a concussion, even though my body was beat to shit and I broke my feet. The helmet was destroyed but my head was in perfect condition even after breaking their windshield and hitting the road multiple times. The sort of hit that happened to me, at the speeds everyone was going, I should have been killed. Most people who go down on the same road die. So yea, those cheap ass helmets can protect you from serious injury every now and then. I now wear a better helmet, but I no longer clown those cheapies. ANYTHING is better than nothing. It saved my head, no doubt about it. Of course, it's not going to save you if you get your head ran over, but neither will most of the better helmets either. |

I was in the bus when some people scream STOP STOP, before the woman even was hit, cause i looked and could see her headlight. It went so fast, i didn't see her face, only the light of her bicycle,
Than i heard her going under the bus, you could hear her banging under the bus. And more people yelled STOP STOP STOP. But the driver drove 100 meters further and than even didn't notice till somebody outside told him what happened and he went to the back. Here i read that Leroy saw he had problems with a taxi driver. That spot where the woman was hit is very dangerous cause it is very small and therefor the bus goes somewhat over the bicycle lane. I know it is dangerous, we had problems with that corner last year also with the stretched limousine. I saw people looking scared when they get out of the bus and wanted to help. Seeing their reaction i waited some seconds, stepped out and walked the other way and didn't look, help was too late. Some peole looked and where in shock. Later i understand that also people where outside the bus and saw the accident happen from the outside. We didn't go for a party after that and some people went home, not in the mood for more days of business and fun. A very terrible accident with an innocent person being killed by a bus. Personally i think the driver is for 50 - 75% responsible for the accident. If he paid more attention to traffic and the screaming passengers instead of making a fight with a taxi driver, she might have lived. Also it was an old guy and i heard that he on the way to the party he also drove like a mad man. It was the old man with the red jacket. Why not 100% quilty? Cause you never know if she would have survived and accidents can Always happen. He should never drive a bus again. I am sure some people who saw it will have nightmares and nobody will forget this. I think i should have stopped people walking to the back and sent them all out to the front. But in the end, this is life. Sometimes there isn't much you can do when you aren't expecting something like this to happen.

Even after this post i feeling bad. i just had a drink on khao san road in thailand and thinking about it. I also remember i ran inside the hotel, putting somebody away who was checking inn and said to the hotel they had to call 112 , the 911 number of Holland immediately and they did. I wasn't able to call myself and i knew the fastest way was to go to the hotel and ordered them to call. We are talking about seconds here, but we knew we where too late. In Thailand i saved someones live last year, but this was awful and nobody could do more than they did. RIP
