On the bright side, for Pens fans like myself. They seemed to play with passion and some desperation last night. They still let the Isle get a good number of shots, but they tightened up as the game went on and seemed like they are ready to beat this team and move on.

fleury is choking hardcore. no confidence, game was much better last night with vokoun in. now the team can play their style, aggressive and not worry about soft goals

I agree. Can't say Fleury is all at fault or all bad, I have to remember he started series with a shutout. Orpik and Letang have seemed to be playing like they were skating pea soup at times, and normally they are a bedrock of consistently good D.

Fleury has bad days like any other goalie but his bad is really bad just as extremely as his really good is amazing.

They've definitely smartened up some, tightened up their D, and their goaltending with Vokoun is looking more solid. They're absolutely ready for round 2 if they keep playing like this.

Who else is sort of digging how the short season meant East and West are going to meet untested against each other until the Cup?

I'm digging it for sure. It feels almost like two separate leagues on a collision course.

I'm also kind of looking forward to next season and seeing the realignment in action. Some brand new divisions, definitely a new division for the Jets, in the western conference. Columbus and Detroit move into the Eastern conf (where they've always belonged).

realignment is awesome!

having the Sens, Habs, Leafs come to Detroit more than once every two years is one of the best things that has happened up here in a while. I usually go to 3 maybe 4 Wings games a year, planning on 8 to 10 from now on!

With realignment I think we're seeing the forrunner for the NHL expanding to 32 teams.

Betman denies it. And we all know what a straight shooter he is. Always truthful, always forthcoming, a true man of his word that one.

Blues; ELIMINATED. LA Kings moving on. That winning goal in the final 2/10'ths of a second at the end of the 2nd period was stunning.

Toronto lives to fight another day. Boston leads series 3-2 going into Toronto for game 6. I'd love to see a game 7 in this one.

Detroit beats the Ducks to force a game 7. Here we go, best hockey in the world, there is no better hockey than a game 7 in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Caps win game 5, taking a 3-2 series lead over the Rangers.

I would seriously love to see a game 7 between TO and Boston. Don't want to jinx it though.

Pens win, buh bye pesky Islanders. 4-3 in OT, series won in 6. No Isles actually put up a great fight and it could just as easily have gone their way. Pens didn't play much like the giant powerhouse team they are purported to be for much of the series.

They'll have to do better against Ottawa in round 2.

Tsk tsk. Shame GFY... SHAME. It's right amid the playoffs, round 2 about to start and this thread is back on page 5.

This board sure has changed over the years.

Toronto has game 7 in the bag, then manages to lose it in the final few minutes and not one comment about it? Amazing.

Did they choke?

People here said Detroit was weak, that they were done, over, kaput, etc. Where are you all hiding now?

Same with LA. They seem to have proven some peole wrong thus far. Will it continue?

I was going to make a thread asking how many Maple Leaf fans had died from sheer shock and disappointment. I didn't see the game, but that was an epic comeback.

On the Pens front, they looked like a quality team in game 1 against the Sens, but they looked that way in game 1 against the Isle too so we will have to wait and see.

Kings pulled off a pretty amazing comeback against the Sharks last night as well.

Well, I can't remember if I voted for Toronto or Ottawa now. But Toronto are goners!

I'm backing the Senators (optimistically).

ROUND 2

Boston-NYRangers - Boston leads series 1-0
This is going to be a good long series. Prediction: Bruins in seven.

Pittsburgh-Ottawa - Pens lead series 1-0
I think we'll see a different Sens in game 2. Prediction: Pittsburgh in five.

LAKings-SJSharks - Kings lead series 2-0
This is the series most likely to be a sweep, but I'll predict Kings in six. I think SJ has it in them to take a few games if they can find a way to shift into a higher gear.

Detroit-Chicago - Blackhawks lead series 1-0
I have mad respect for the Red Wings, always have. But Chicago is playing like a cup-worthy contender right now and they're not even playing their absolute best yet.
Prediction: Blackhawks in six.

iiHF 2013 Worlds
--- USA beats Russia! Canada OUT after losing in quarterfinals to Sweden! It's down to four teams, and frankly I'm at this point pulling for Switzerland. They are so far unbeaten in this tournament which absolutely astounds me. USA's 8-3 win over the Russian powerhouse team was pretty astounding as well.

All in all some pretty great hockey going on right now.

If you look at the poll it will tell you which one you voted for. It'll be the one in italics.

I'd like to see that series go seven games. At this point I doubt it will, but there's nothing stopping Ottawa from catching fire and taking it to the Pens except, well, Ottawa.

I have to update here about the iiHF Worlds. The Swiss can't MISS. 3-0 over team USA taking their unbeaten streak to 9 and 0. I think everyone viewed them going into this tournament based on past performance and simply didn't see them coming... and it's been a fatal mistake of nine teams, possibly soon to be ten. They play Sweden for the gold tomorrow. The Fins and the US play for bronze.

Last night's Sens-Pens game; what a show Sid the kid put on. Crosby haters out there must be seething right now. Dude suffers a major concussion, has his damn face broken by a puck, then comes back and bangs home a hattrick in round 2 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Unreal.

My brother and I were watching the Pens game last night. I'm a big Pens fan and he likes the Blackhawks so we are hoping for a Pens/Hawks final.

When the game was over the summed it up well when we said, "Ottawa played pretty well, but when you have the best player in the world on your team sometimes he just goes out and wins a game for you."

That last Pens-Sens game was one of the best games of the playoffs so far.

Wings on a roll: Gustav Nyquist and Drew Miller scored 31 seconds apart midway through the second period to help Detroit beat the Chicago Blackhawks 3-1 and take a 2-1 lead in their series. Two goals in particular stood out for me. First, Chicago's lone goal was sublime, an amazing pass from Duncan Keith to Patrick Kane, what a goal that was. Then Detroit's 3rd where Datsyuk sniped one from the top of the circle with a 120 kph wrister top shelf... classic, breathtaking. Hawks better wake up or they're in trouble.

Two games tonight; the Rangers host Boston (Bruins lead 2-0)
and L-A visits San Jose (Kings up 2-1).

Boston 6 cups
Rangers 4
Blackhawks 4
Kings 1

Red Wings 11

There is a reason why they have so many.

* San Jose 0...

Now we got ourselves a series! San Jose Sharks beat the L.A. Kings 2-1 to even their series at two games apiece.

In last night’s only other game, Dan Paille scored the winner with 3:31 left in regulation as Boston put the Rangers on the brink of elimination with a 2-1 victory. Bruins lead the series 3-0. Is it possible? Could it be the Rangers are going to get swept?

Tonight it’s Pittsburgh visiting Ottawa – Pens lead series 2-1. I'd love to see this one go to a game 7, but if Pens win tonight I pretty much see my original prediction coming true of Pens in 5.

I agree, however not everyone does, I had company down for the weekend and they watched the game with me. I had thought that only Toronto fans were sore losers, I thought that Montreal fans had a lot to hold their heads high about this season, I was wrong. My company (two Montreal fans) told me that the Ottawa Pittsburgh games was one of the most boring games they had ever seen. I bit my tongue, luckily my father in law who is also a huge Montreal fan called them a couple fucking idiots and told them to stop watching if they don't like Canada's team! lol

Anyways, I think the Pens will win the series, but would love to see Ottawa squeak another one out tonight!

Ottawa 0 in the modern era but they were winners of the cup 11 times in the early era. There are 11 Stanley Cup banners hanging in Scotiabank Place.

Four of those SC wins came while Ottawa was a member of the NHL, and one of them while the NHL was the only league competing for the cup.

I know it's mostly trivial but people do count the other teams cup wins from the early era too.

As a huge Pens fan I was sad to see them lose that game, but it is hockey and strange things happen.

For me, what hurt was how they lost it. They are on the power play and can run the clock out and for some reason their coach has an odd combination of players on the ice. The entire game their power play had done a great job controlling the puck. They hadn't scored much with it, but they were controlling the puck well.

I don't fault them for losing in overtime. That was exciting, but I think their coach, who seems to normally be all over it, dropped the ball in the last 90 seconds of the game that cost them.

I look for them to win tonight. I think tonight's game will tell the tale of the series. It seems like the wild series with the Isle has energized the Pens while the wild series with the Habs kind of drained the Sens. Maybe the Sens will carry the momentum from that last win into tonight, but I think Sid and Malkin are going to be fired up and a handful to deal with.

Last night's game by comparisson was a near-complete bust from a fan's perspective. I'm talking about hockey game "watchability". Ottawa had a pretty decent first period and then for some reason they simply fell apart about ten seconds into the 2nd and it just got uglier from there. Pens fans of course will be delighted. Montreal fans, well since many of them despise the Sens for ousting their squad early they are also understandibly elated.

@Phil: Fact is some people simply wouldn't know a great hockey game if it hit them in the face. No playoff game in the history of the sport that went into double sudden-death overtime was ever boring.

All relative... fair comparison for original 6 but otherwise it is apples and oranges due to time in League.

Agree... and that Pens Sens game was great hockey through two periods but those back to back goals just completely knocked the fight out of the Sens.

Looking forward to Kings and Sharks because that is looking like it might go 7 games at the current pace of play.

Ottawa goalie stretching for the puck made no sense. He should have been posting on the side of the net ready to bounce over in case of a pass. Instead he stretches himself half way around the back side of the net and pitt capitalizes on it. Then it was all down hill.

I'd like to see that series go seven games. At this point I doubt it will, but there's nothing stopping Ottawa from catching fire and taking it to the Pens except, well, Ottawa.
First time I've ever known that, but then I usually remember who I voted for.

Well, I did vote Sens. 3-1 down now though, hopefully they can turn it around

Rangers stay alive in the Eastern conference last night with a 4-3 OT win over the Bruins. Brad Richards was a healthy scratch for game 4.

Jimmy Howard scored a shutout last night in the Red Wings' 2-0 win over the Hawks. The Wings take a 3-1 lead in that series.

Jonathan Quick was also perfect on the night, as his LA Kings take a 3-2 lead in their series vs. The Sharks.

I must say I don't recall ever seeing so much home ice advantage taking place as I have in these playoffs. It isn't 100% mind you, but damn a lot of teams are winning at home so far.

It's nice to see someone up on his hockey knowlege. It's like when people say Winnipeg has never won a cup, I just have to smile (and inwardly laugh at their ignorance of the sport they claim to know about). Early 1900's saw Winnipeg enjoying several Stanley Cup wins. And, although it wasn't the Stanley Cup the Jets did win the WHA's Avco cup 4 times in the 70's. (It counts because I say it counts)

But of course the original 6 teams are going to have a boatload of cups more than anyone else. For thirty-odd years those were the only teams playing for it. But I can assure anyone thinking that because a team has X number of cups won in the past that it explains why they are winning today... it doesn't. It means squat, actually. Look at Edmonton. Many cup wins in the past, where are they right now?

Here's the complete history of Stanley Cup winners for anyone who wants to read up on it;

After the expansion in 67 the cup has went to an original six team 18 times. That is 40%. I'd say being an original six team still carries some weight.

Looking back 20 years it is still 40% and looking back 10 (9 with lockout) it is 3, so 30% (33%). With original six making up 20% of the league I would say it is still very relevant.

On a non-NHL topic, here in Portland we are celebrating the Winterhawks winning tonight and making it to the Memorial Cup finals.

As a little piece of trivia, the Winterhawks last won the Memorial Cup in 1998. The scoring leader for the tournament was Marian Hossa (now a Blackhawk star) and the Winterhawk team included Brendan Morrow who is now playing for the Penguins and Justin Morneau who is now a star baseball player.

Marian Hossa... left the Penguins for the Red Wings only to lose the cup to the Penguins. Now he is Blackhawks and he just might have been better off with the Red Wings.

Being a Red Wings fan my scenario goes we finish off Chicago, then Los Angeles. Then we play Boston and take the cup.

It all got put into motion when we played Ducks instead of Chicago in first round.

Don't laugh, I went with Chicago. Unless they can find a way to play like they did last night for at least two more games they'll soon be joining the Sens on the golf course.

ELIMINATION WEEKEND! Rangers OUT. Sens OUT! But I have to say, I am really looking forward to watching the Pens-Bruins series, it should be a great one. Rangers were a victim of their own ineffectual offense and an inability to counter the Bruins' fourth line and a 22-year-old rookie.

Sens, well, I guess Alfredson was right in what he said. I guess they truly were overmatched. *shrugs*

Of course they were overmatched. But they had more rookies and young guys on their roster than any other team in the playoffs. They obviously weren't going to win the cup this year but the experience they gained by making it to the second round will be huge for them going forward. I think they've got some good years ahead of them.

I think you're right.

I'm just a 'never say die' kind of guy I guess, thus it surprised the hell out of me when their captain basically said they coultn't win. No matter how tough the opponent is that's something in my opinion you never say. Imagine if Phil Esposito had uttered a similar sentiment back in '72 during the summit series. There'd have been hell to pay!
