Movie Review - Kingsmen: The Secret Service
Kingsmen: The Secret Service is a fun action romp about British intelligence agents (non-MI5) who must stop an Internet mogul turned super-villain from mind-controlling the world into an orgy of depopulating violence. To its credit, Kingsmen manges to perfectly blend spy movie panache with action movie thrills with a snarky tone that charms.
Who are the Kingsmen? Posh sons of Saville Row tailors who used their fancy suit-making money to build their own spy agency. Cribbing names from the Arthurian legend like Merlin and Lancelot, these sometime detectives, sometime assassains help maintain world peace and order. When one of them falls (in literal pieces) to an unknown assailant, the Kingsmen must find a replacement and investigate. Their attention is brought to the flailing son of another fallen Kingsman, young Eggsy.
Eggsy lives with his mum and toddler-aged sister in a British housing project along with his mum's street tough boyfriend. Eggsy's shenanigans against the thug and his crew land him in hot water with the coppers and his only salvation is his dad's connection to Kingsmen. Sensing latent brilliance, he is admitted for candidacy to the Kingsmen.
Meanwhile we uncover the film's villain, the dapper Zuckerberg-ian clone Valentine (played with ruthless cool by Samuel L. Jackson) is philanthropist-turned-misanthrope who blames mankind itself for the world's problems. Valentine's solution is simple: gather the world's elite to his Bond-villain bunker and let the rest of the world kill each other off by use of an ultrasonic hypnotic control signal. Beamed to the world from Valentine's own free SIM cards, the cities of the world will become massive MMA fights until none remain standing.
If this sounds like James Bond mixed with a comic book movie, that's because those are precisely its origins. Mark Miller, who wrote the graphic novel 'Kick Ass', re-teamed with Matthew Vaughn, who directed Kick Ass on the big-screen to visualize a wild, action-filled spy movie first as a comic book which then became storyboard for Vaughn to film and his own fun directorial touches. Everything is fun to the point of ludicrous, but Vaughn walks the line so perfectly, all we end up with is cheering and laughs. Cheers to a film that takes its action and characters seriously, but so much else gloriously less so.
