Planning a mainstream site - Primer info?

I been planning on building my first mainstream site. I would like to sell water filtration equipment (portable camping filters and stuff for preppers).

Not sure where to get started. Should I buy a bulk amount of filters off Alibaba and sell them, Should I just open a site and become an affiliate, or try an ebay store and see if it works? How do I know if I am looking into a niche with too much competition?

I haven't done this myself yet; so take my advice with a grain of salt. But I would begin as an affiliate or focus on drop shipping. That eliminates the overhead costs, hassle, and risk of purchasing and warehousing the products. Once you have a smoothly running, profitable, drop shipping website, you can change the business model to handle the merchandise yourself.

Thanks AdultAudiences. Looks like I chose a competitive business. But on the bright side, I should be able to find affiliate sponsors and drop shipping suppliers.

You should look into partnering with a company that is local. Look for registered distributor deals. Ebay is a waste of time - the fees will end up killing you. + you are shipping something from wherever and that will kill your retail pricing. Ebay + shipping = bye bye.

Start a store - use a free cart system.. do a little seo, get a keyword rich domain. See what happens in 4 months. Here is an idea for you, get a cart solution, set it up, put some products in it, keyword and onpage seo the shit out of it... but dont integrate paypal or a payment solution.. just let people get to the checkout and it will error out. Then you start getting emails, then you get some data to analyze and then you will know what you should do.. until then, dont drop too much $ on it.

Hi I just launched my first real mainstream site recently, it is a prepper site.

I had similar thoughts to yours, I decided to go down the affiliate path, although as the site is new, I have not gotten around to adding any actual ads. At the moment I am just trying to get traffic / links. I think the affiliate path is probably useful to get a feel for the particular market but take my advice with a grain of salt because i am new to mainstream.

we've got some mainstream offers with our partner networks moreniche.com, targetclick and paydot.com

impactfive itself is sort of mainstream with various male/female health products form extenders, breast enlargement serums and penis pills...

all the networks offer lifetime cookies and tons of free resources to help you get started. no need for hassle with drop shipping or ebay stores...

I like that idea. I actually bought 2 domains. One that is just a list of widgets from Amazon. I want to use that for my market research.

I also bought another and am gonna play with agoracart to see if I can get that working. I may just do like you say. Set the cart up and just let it error out on checkout.

Like your site Jaeger. I want to reach out to that niche with my backpacker/emergency section of water filters.

I am trying to use key phrases that I read in magazines. Like "pocket survival kit" and "bug out bag".

Here's my quick FREE blueprint for you

1) Find all relevant keywords for your niche using both google keyword selector (use exact match) and spyfu or semrush

2) Filter your relevant keywords based on number of competing pages, search volume, and commercial value (CPC)

3) At the end of the process, you should have a list of low competition, decent search, and commercial keywords

4) Create a wordpress blog based on your MAIN keyword - use a brandable non exact match domain name

5) Get a custom theme that truly brands what you are trying to push - put a landing page at the front and a blog at the end. You will draw traffic from SEs, forums, social network sites, and sources using the blog part. You will get opt-in email subscribers with your landing page

6) Create an ebook or other VALUE-ADDED premium for your landing page. This must be sexy enough to get email addresses from your blog's visitors. Your goal is to turn temporary traffic into a PERMANENT POOL of buyers

7) Sign up for Aweber or any other autoresponder service-put the code on your main page AND the sign up email address as a FOOTER on all your blog posts

8) When people click their double opt in email confirmation, use a TELL A FRIEND / Address book referer front end as the confirmation page

9) Set up an every other day or every 3 days email seminar for your list members. Keep upselling them with every email they get.

OF COURSE, you have to stock your blog with compelling SEO KEYWORD BLOG POSTS that are ENGAGING and 'informative'
