FreeBSD or CentOS

What is better, and why?

So, recently some of the stuff has stopped to work in the control panel of the hosting company I'm using. I can't access FTP unless I add my IP to the firewall, but the thing in the control panel that ads IPs to firewall is not working, so I must ask them each time I want to access stuff via FTP to whitelist my IP in the firewall. Their technician told me that they stopped supporting FreeBSD and that everything would work again if I moved to CentOS.

Now, I’m not feeling comfortable with this after using FreeBSD os for over 12 years... but maybe the change is good? What do you think?

centos is easier to use and manage freebsd is more secure and is harder to crash.

that being said either will do fine for a server its a mater of preference mostly.

most half ass tech's wont touch freebsd because its harder so centos will always be preferred.

personally i stick to freebsd but i know people that have switched to centos.

Based on what you have told us, CentOS is obviously better. Why? Because it works better with your control panel and that's all that really matters; right?

If you are eliminating the control panel, then whichever you like is best.

I have been recommending CentOS for 10+ years, but those people were using DirectAdmin.

Difference between FreeBsd and Centos/Debian is same as difference between Perl/C++/Java/ and PHP
- first one is much better but also much harder to use. The thing is, what is most important is time, and that is why Centos/debian and PHP are top picks.
I tried once freebsd for fun and kicks but when i see howmany additional steps i need to take to do stuff which take 5 seconds to do on centos i said fuck it having a secure shell is not worth to spend somuch extra time on everything.

I use FreeBSD on all my servers now and love it. I love having all my config files in /usr/local/etc, zfs-on-root is great, being able to switch between ipfw and pf, updates are super easy with pkg and freebsd-update, and performance is great!

Thank you everyone for the comments. Very interesting/educative information.

Well, I have never had any problem with FreeBSD, so the change feels to me like going into the unknown, a bit. From the usage point of view I don’t see any problem for the daily simple tasks. But I've read here and there that FreeBSD is better performer in terms of speed, I don't know, it’s just what I read.
