I have a survivalist friend and asked their thoughts.

First comment, Anything rei is overpriced. . if its a good unit try to go direct from manufacturers. I go to rei and basspro because i like to look and touch objects... Then i photo them, go home and buy online.

Then, Its cheaper at biolite.com

Looks like a nifty unit.
I guess the main considerations would be:

In what conditions would it be used (u something bigger for snow or alpine environments) ...
Is the energy /usb really required? If your camping with your car next to you you can use a different rocket stove and charge usb of car 12v
And is weight an important factor (backpackers and hikers may ve counting every pound.. This one is 7 but you can get amazing alpine level stoves at 3lbs)

If its for people who like camping in yosemite in spring etc then sure... Looks great
Oh the other thing is it intended for heat or fir cooking
Because you can cook on this fine
But since it uses twigs it must be constantly manned
Ie you can go to sleep expecting heat all night

I have a handbuilt rocket stove in my yurt... It takes 2x4 even 4x4 wood no problem
But still have to add wood ever half hour.

So cooking = great
Need heat.... Get a collapsible box stove

She ended by saying she may get one to test

I have 2 friends who own a bio lite stove. They're both happy with the performance. The usb charger works but i wouldn't expect a fast charge. I use the MSR Superfly canister stove which is small & quick to use, but no charge features.

This is what a lot of through hikers use (guys that hike AT or PCT) much lighter can be made on the go and isnt $100..

Don't forget, you have to carry that shit in your pack, you want it as small and light as possible..
