Bitcoin question
Hello GFY
When Bit coin fist came out , I set up an account and was paid 300 bit coins for a design job I did for someone, I lost interest etc and until recently didn't think much about it. Is there a way of finding lost bit coins or getting old accounts working again? Thanks GFY you have always been a great source of help?

Not unless you still have the wallet saved somewhere and remember the password.

There are various wallets to store them in. Some are online, some are offline. Do you remember the one you used?

if you used Electrum or similar and still have your 12-24 seed words then you can install Electrum again and recover your account/bitcoins

Where did you receive the Bitcoin "to"?
Were you running a local Bitcoin client on your computer? In this instance, your funds are stored in a local wallet, which is basically a database of private cryptographic keys. If you lose your keys (ie delete the file, or HD dies), your funds are permanently lost. Or were you using an online wallet service? If it was this, you may be able to recover your login user/pass and therefore your Bitcoins. This is assuming the online wallet website hasn't been "hacked" (air quotes) and shut down without reimbursing customers. As freecartoonporn suggests, checking emails is a good start as it may tell you what method you used to store and receive them. |

BTW if all else fails and you can't get into your account/wallet, you can hire someone to try and break into it. If they succeed they'll charge you a %.

300 coins? If you're serious, that's worth $2.4 Million dollars today. And more importantly, it makes me your new best friend!
Go over all of your notes and find out how you were paid. Most probably, you were paid directly to your own bitcoin wallet. If thats the case, those coins are still in that wallet, and still on that computer. Hopefully, you still have both, and haven't reformatted your hard disk. Look around for the bitcoin wallet software you had, for example, Multibit. Load up the program and enter your password. If you don't remember your password, you will need to restore it but doing so is tough. If it uses the Lighthouse BIP32 format, you would have written down a series of words like Home, Train, Orange, Car, and about 12 other words in a certain order. You would need these words to restore your wallet but of course this depends on the wallet you used. Good luck! And yes, you CAN buy me a Tesla Model S, my new friend!

The mention of an 'account' in the OP makes me think it may be an online wallet service. Hopefully one that still survives today. |

I seem to think just a few weeks ago that there was someone on GFY that had a script or a program that could locate lost keys.

There have been several online wallet providers that have been "hacked" (again, air quotes) and since they could not reimburse their customers they shut down. To be fair, some did make some attempts at paying the funds back, but the majority of them couldn't possibly recover from such a large theft... assuming it was even a theft by a third party. Some providers have dropped off the face of the earth without notice, disappearing with customer's funds, not even bothering with the pretense of being hacked.
A lot of Bitcoin services were/are provided by people who are smart programmers, but have little to no experience with financial services, or, more importantly, online security. An exchange or online wallet is going to be subject to constant intrusion attempts. It is possible to find lost keys, even if the wallet has been deleted, but it can be a long shot. Still worth a try. I once recovered half a million keys from my NAS array (99.9% coincidentally had the same signature as a private key so were bogus) just to see if any still had value. |

No, one of the core principles of Bitcoin is that you can store your wallet locally and do not rely on any third parties... BUT... for non technical people this can be a real headache. It's far easier to make an account on a website that offers an online wallet. For people playing with Bitcoin in the early days, storing a few bucks worth of value on a third party website probably didn't seem like a big risk, but then that value started going up...

Note: If you record you "hunt" this would be a great video if you end up recovering them.

Search all your old computers / drives for a file wallet.dat <-- once you have it install the old bitcoin core software and open the wallet with your password that you commonly used at the time.

You could check you inbox, for email from a BitCoin Wallet host, that would have confirmed your details.
