Google Chrome much slower than Safari and Firefox on Speedtest.net. Any ideas why?
So at home I have a 1.2GB connection to the Internet and I ran speedtest.net to test it, and saw I was only getting about 500MB.
I called Bell (our service provider) and they tested everything out, even swapped the router and fiber connection, and speed is still the same. CRAP! Must be my network. But nope! Everything checked out. So then just for fun I tried Safari and boom, 1GB. Then I tried Firefox and Internet Explorer and got the same results. Only Google Chrome is giving me slow results. Does anyone here have any idea what it could be?

Online speed testing is done by sampling low level TCP parameters like send window sizes and the like. It's not just a simple download for X seconds then divide amount by X seconds measurement (which would actually be more accurate)
Chrome may open TCP sockets in a slightly different way, perhaps even just initially, so the test is fooled. |

Demo of how speed testing can be way off because it's not measuring actual transfer. This was accessed via an ADSL2+ link (20Mbps) with an intermediate VPS. It's measuring the 'speed' of the VPS connection, not the end to end speed between my browser and the speed measuring site. |
