So they did a study on "gut feelings"... turns out you're dumb,.

Who would of thought.

The study found that people who trust their gut feelins vs actual facts are usually wrong and will often double down after being proven wrong. Oh gee which group of people could that be????

https://news.osu.edu/news/2017/09/18/fake-news/

People who tend to trust their intuition or to believe that the facts they hear are politically biased are more likely to stand behind inaccurate beliefs, a new study suggests.

And those who rely on concrete evidence to form their beliefs are less likely to have misperceptions about high-profile scientific and political issues, said Kelly Garrett, the lead researcher and a professor of communication at The Ohio State University

Imagine that...

people using gut feelings over logic is generally universally human. Most people react to things emotionally instead, including you and many others here when it comes to partisan politics. One should be able to see things from both perspectives if you want to actually use logic instead.

Its the ability to set aside "gut feels" to uselogic and accept facts.. Thats the key here.

Think about this for a moment.. people on the right for example refuse to believe in global warming being affected by man. They don't disagree based on scientific proof but rather political affilation.

Meanwhile to believe what they believe would require you to believe that 99.9% of all scientists of this planet and pretty much every govt in the world is in on a big scam.. but of course they the right wingers are the ones who really know whats up..

Its like this with everything as welll.. its all fake news that Russia trying to attack our election process.. Its all fake news that a guy with a history of scamming people did anything wrong. Benghazi was a cover up.. cheese pizza was child porn and Hillary had a sex dungon.. The list of insanity could go on and on..

I mean for fucks sake the right wing has gone fucking insane.. I mean fuck the left has some problems, but the right wing is absolutely bat shit crazy.. Their lack of ability to use logic and common sense is driving them off a cliff like a bunch of blind sheep.

You can talk yourself into anything but it does not change the facts surrounding that issue.

A low quality and fundamentally flawed study which assumes conspiracies are all wrong, so they conclude that anyone who believes in conspiracies is dumb because they are 'wrong'.

I've researched gut instinct before, logic comes up better for simple decisions, while gut instinct has superior outcomes for complex. Gut feelings are tools for an uncertain world. They are not a sixth sense or God’s voice. They are based on lots of experience, an unconscious form of intelligence.

The trouble with going with your gut is that your gut is usually full of shit.

I always trust my gut feelings when it comes to meeting new people. If my spidy-senses tells me something is off, I will usually back away.

Too bad you can not test how it works out, maybe all people you backed away from were quality ones. So how do you know if your "radar" is working correctly here?

Interesting theory but my cousin wrote that study and he said he was stoned out of his mind and probably was wrong. Ugh I hate when that happens.

There is generally a "study" to support every conclusion. When it is reviewed and bolstered by others I'll take a look at it.

There were a lot of "gut feelings" involved in our election obviously. Not only do Trump supporters go with their gut, they also usually have a big gut. And sometimes a big gunt.

Aptly put.

It all begins with both sides agreeing they are being mutually fucked over by this juggernaut of modern day manipulation.

Wait... what?

Who funded this? Read that sentence out loud and try to take it serious. Translation: "Believe everything the mainstream media (for-profit corporations) tell you, or you're wrong"

Meanwhile, CNN themselves admitted all they spread is quote "bullshit" and quote "a big nothing burger"...

On a more serious note, I have seen these studies about "fake news". The problem with it is that they treat mainstream media by default as 'real' news. They do not see the bigger, more complex scope of what a news corporation drives and the tactics they use.
In reality, mainstream media could not be any more further from reporting actual facts. So the 'neutral' line in studies towards fake news is always completely off from the start, making these kind of studies worthless.

People like simple, easily identifiable bad guys, like in a 60s Bond movie. The layers, subtlety and professionalism of mainstream media in spreading propaganda is too complex for them. But Alex Jones in a lunatic rage talking about gay fish fits the mold perfectly. The cartoonish bad guy steals the thunder of the real bad guys each and every time, simply because the average joe is not interested in the real bad guys - it doesn't release dopamine, it is not sensational (to them) because it's not that obvious (to them).

A), there is no such thing is a "gut feeling" with respect to processing a question. this is a brain process. not a stomach process. though your gut actually drives many brain processes - thats a rather long lecture on a relatively new science and not relevant.

B) the study is completely idiotic in that it asks users questions about how, when and where they rely on so called "gut feelings" when they have no idea when or if they are doing it. you are only aware of those mental processes which rise to conscious awareness. you have absolutely no fucking clue what happens before that instant. information is processed UNCONSCIOUSLY first... with only a few winning snippets rising to conscious awareness. since you have no conscious awareness of whats being processed unconsciously and as such, no real idea of why you are answering the way you are, its a retarded premise for a "study".

C) questions are processed quite differently in the brain depending on their content and whether its related to reason, morality, math etc.so again, the idea of a "gut feeling" as a catch all is quite stupid.

D) rather than explaining to a cesspool of idiots how questions are processed in the brain, its easier to just point out that unconscious bias testing also explains perfectly why this study is stupid.

When you flash words like "african american + good" on a screen - then measure the time it takes the user to hit "agree" or "disagree" - there is a great deal of hesitation with people who initially agree, then hesitate and choose the socially acceptable answer.

The initial flash of positive or negative emotional affect which happens unconsciously (i.e. you don't even fucking know its happen as you have no awareness of it), iIS THE REAL ANSWER BEFORE you can rationalize and intellectualize and impress peers.

INCIDENTALLY, i use this example as it's a very interesting example of how unconscious bias works, where people who swear up and down they aren't racist, prejudiced or bigoted and see all people equally or whatever, end up responding EXACTLY in the same way everyone else does... including black people... and it happens in a very measurable way and these results are duplicated constantly in experiment.

E) People don't agree or disagree with the news because of a "gut feeling". people agree and disagree instantly when it supports an existing belief or narrative held by the individual. weighing the content in its totality has very little to NOTHING do with the response/belief in its validity as thats pre-determined with the content only being used later if necessary to argue for that belief or narrative.

Its funny you can't seem to follow Trump's money nor any of his cronies... It's as if your mind is made up despite any info that everything govt is bad and everything Trump is good.
