Oh My God... 8 Elderly lose their lifes in Nursing Home because air conditioner not working...

In Fort Lauderdale right across the street from a hospital...

This was after the storm was over...

Workers trying to blame FPL..

Saying there was nothing they could do... My god.. My god....

Move the poor souls out...

FPL says nursing homes not listed as a top priority..

Dear Lord how could this happen...

Right air conditioner unit going out doesn't kill 8 people.

Elderly people are very susceptible to heat exhaustion. There was a story I read not too long ago about a heat wave in Chicago about 20 years ago that killed about 800 people because of heat exhaustion. Among those were several older people who were in a hospital that didn't have AC.

No backup generator? At the nursing home I just left, they tested the emergency backup once a month. It was used once during a snowstorm. Outlets in red were used so oxygen and other electronics could be used to sustain life. Heat worked but it's an emergency system that is outdated. 70 degrees was too cold for most. CNAs wondered where people would end up if the system failed.

Heat and humidity in Florida with no air-conditioning can be deadly. Lawsuits will begin but the fines could bankrupt the nursing home and insurance company.

You think relatives wil be safe when put in a home, but you don't think of asking about emergency backup systems.

RIP

My mom is in her 70's and a few years ago moved into an assisted living community. We looked at several of them before picking this one. Most of them are run as cheaply as possible and they cut corners everywhere they can. Out of 6 or 7 places we looked at only one of them had any kind of backup power system. Of course, where we live there aren't hurricanes. In all the time I have lived here there has only been once or twice that I can remember where the power was out for more than a handful of hours.

It may be a surprise but elderly people routinely die at nursing homes. This was likely a "hospice" level facility. Many may have died in that same time frame during normal circumstances. The heat may have contributed but the article doesn't say it was the cause.

That was really sad. They should have been bussed out of the area.

In the summer more elderly die cause of heat, even in Holland.
The earth protects itself for 'climate change' by whiping out some old folks.

I'm not saying people don't die from heat, but....

Cold weather kills far more people than hot weather

According to the news, the hospital across the road called to offer help but staff said they were fine. People were moving to the parking lots and grassy areas but weren't moved fast enough.

I was at least twenty-five years younger than the folks at my Home but many were ill with dementia. No understanding of emergency situations, fire alarms or heat/cold. There isn't enough staff to safely evacuate.

Deaf people can't hear the alarm and no red lights would flash.

They say the eight died of the heat but until autopsies are done, its speculation. But, to be offered help and turn it down? If they'd gotten people out sooner, who knows

At least some good news came out of this rather boring hurricane. I am sure at least 4 of them are glad to be dead. Ages 77 to 99 and stuck in some cheap nursing home by their ungrateful and uncaring family! Shame on them!
