Too deliberate to be natural cat behavior. The cat may house a soul that previously lived in human form and has a connection to the souls of humans in the house. Living through the cat may have been the only way in.

I had a Russian Blue whom I could leave in the bathroom sink, sitting in warm water.

Regarding cats. To get them accustomed to water it's pretty easy. When they are kittens, fill a bathtub with a bit of water, and drop one or two live gold fish in to swim around. Kittens will be drawn to the fish, and it will be easier to place them into the water itself.
