LOL: colleges and universities are having a negative impact on the United States

... I can't make that shit up ... I would be so embarassed if I was american ....

Republicans increasingly think colleges are harming the U.S

Quote:
A new survey from the Pew Research Center finds that a majority of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents (58 percent) now think that colleges and universities are having a negative impact on the United States. That?s up from 45 percent last year.

For comparison, most Democrats and Democratic leaners (72 percent) think that institutions of higher learning are having a positive effect on the country, which is consistent with poll results from recent years.

Republican positions on colleges and universities changed drastically over a relatively short period.

Less than two years ago, in September 2015, 54 percent of Republicans thought colleges and universities were having a positive impact on the U.S. Only 37 percent thought otherwise. Last year, Republicans were split on the impact of these schools (43 percent positive versus 45 percent negative).

This is the first time a majority of Republicans expressed disapproval of higher education since the Pew Research Center started asking this question in 2010.

This shouldn't be too big of a shock to anyone who follows politics. During the 2012 Republican primaries, Rick Santorum made being anti-college one of the big parts of his campaign. He called Obama an "elitist snob" because Obama had recently made a statement about wanting to make college available to everyone.

Of course, Santorum has a degree in law, so does his wife

"The campaign for the neologism "santorum" started with a contest held in May 2003 by Dan Savage, a sex columnist and LGBT rights activist. ... Savage announced the winning entry, which defined "santorum" as "the frothy mixture of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the byproduct of anal sex"."

It's the basic strategy of all dictators: Keeping their people uneducated and poor! It's then easier to make them believe biased propaganda and to buy their votes...

I was looking at my uni today - the fucking assholes want over 50k a year *tuition* now NOT including room and board. What poor person can afford that? I had a friend who died recently at age 55, he was still in debt for student loans! For the shit they teach you, I'm not sure it is worth it.

College is like Paris Hilton now. Everybody still does it but no one knows why.

Today's college grads generally do not go on to work in their field of study.

They get a career doing something totally different and try to say their "well rounded education" applies. In reality it doesn't and they pissed $xx,xxx down the toilet.

^^^^ This.

Today fewer go on to work in the field they studied. Most in the US end up in debt. A real apprenticeship in a trade that can be taught while in work is a better option. Those twisting the results of the survey to being against any education are mad.

Outside of STEM most university programs are nothing but leftist indoctrination and the degrees they offer are basically worthless - especially when the market is flooded with them.

No, of course not. The point is, spending 200k on a BA degree that does not actually provide benefit just because everyone else does it is not a decision based on intelligent evaluation.

That is kind of what it has come to in the US. It may not be this way in other nations but here it is.

The only benefit a BA degree provides is a kind of crowd approval, which has benefit now, and is kind of like the equivalent of looking down on blacks and gays 75 years ago. It may not have been the right thing to do, but since everyone was doing it and you'd commit career suicide if you didn't play along, you'd have done it too.

Effectively, the emperor has no clothes.

STEM degrees are another matter, as are community colleges.

Well, we see that the poll is spot on ....

Note: just rented a 1500.00/month condo to two young professionals: 25 & 26 yearls old, one is an " actuary " at TD bank ( 100K/year) and she has a degree as a structure engineer, evaluating 3 job offers all over 100K ....

I told them they were stupid and should have been home schooled , learning about God ....

Only an idiot would come to that conclusion.

Saying that colleges are having a negative impact is not the same as saying going to college is bad.

Of course, you don't have the mental firepower to figure that out.

Yeah I saw this earlier, Republican's new strategy is war on education... granted it's not new they've been working on dumbing down their followers in states like Texas for a while now..

College is a tool that can help you if used properly.

Many people end up in different fields than they studied, but that doesn't change the fact that people with college degrees, on average, make about 50% more than those who don't and will make about $1 million more during their lifetime.

That said, if you don't know what you want to do and you can't get scholarships/grants to pay for much of the college, don't waste your money until you know what you want to do. Also, going to trade schools, getting an apprenticeship etc. is a fantastic option for a lot of people who don't want to go to college or what to do some other type of trade.
