What is the coolest 80's arcade game?

What is the coolest 80's arcade game that would love to own today? Space Invaders? Asteroids? Star Trek? Defender? Pac Man? Donkey Kong?

I've decided to treat myself and buy a classic arcade game for my basement. Not a multi-cade game (That I can build myself) but a genuine, all original, 80's arcade game.

If you could buy only one, which one would you buy?

I loved defender... Pac Man gets boring.

Donkey Kong always fun as well, I would spend my whole allowance on that one.

I played Donkey Kong but never went out of my way to play it. Defender on the other hand, is one I would line up quarters to play.

I dunno if it as 80's or 90s but Sega made a sit down racing game that could be linked to other machines so you could race AI and real people.

It was called Indy 500, was likely one of the most realistic driving games when it came to input/traction/shifting/breaking ect.

You could not beat the AI using auto trans and if you did not properly down shift while breaking, you couldn't win much less if you crashed or bumped a wall, you lost.

I spent so many quarters on that game, it actually improved my real life racing at the time. I raced shifter karts at the time and that game was almost like driving one.

It would have to be one of these (the "coolest" one - the one that will make everyone go 'OMG!' - is at the end):

Ms. Pacman
Donkey Kong
Galaga
Centipede
Dig Dug

or....

TRON!

I remember when my local arcade installed 6 player Virtua Racing. To race against 5 other people at that time on a game which had groundbreaking graphics for the time was incredible. I spent a shitload of time and money on that. And saw a few fights break out also

Yeah it sure did, and the coolest thing about Tron (and what made it so different from other arcade games) is you had to play each level wit a different skill set. So shooting for one level, riding a bike in a maze the next, etc. Other games it was about how many points scored but Tron it was about how many levels you could get through without dying. Awesome fun!!

I was a huge arcade game player hours and hours a day at the skating rink & the mall. I played all the games , all types but the three I played the most are Ms. Pacman, Galaga & Phoenix

Ms Pac-Man is way better than pacman, aside from the fact it was created by Midway, an American company, it also goes at a faster pace than pacman, has cooler mazes, more ghosts etc. The only thing I hate about it is that it's girly looking I hated that and the lipstick & bow on the Pac-Man

Fun fact, did you know Pac-Man was originally called Puc-Man in Japan? When first introduced to the states people would vandalize the game and change the P to an F making Fuc-Man so they quickly changed the name to Pac-Man.

That being said Galaga is my all time favorite with Phoenix as a close second. You're not limited to a maze and when you get up there in the levels it gets insanely fast and fun with showers of bombs coming down on you, total blast , the best game from the 80's IMO OP 👍🏼☺️

This is the game and vs AI on that track you couldn't beat the number 1 car if you crashed or hit the walls. This guy is hitting a lot of shit and spends most of his time in 4th - 6th spot to give you an idea of how hard it was.

This was the hardest track, the Indy track was much easier, but bayside was a monster to win.

I love retro gaming as much as the next guy but those old school arcade games get dull pretty fast I find. If i'm going to put a giant gaming box in my place i'd probably go with a decent pinball machine instead.

Hi CS,

Very cool!!

I plan to have at least 2 games - 1 will be a genuine 80's stand-up arcade, but the other will be one that I build myself. I have been looking at the bar-top games like this. They look fun to build but I think I will still try to build a full size one. I don't know why I want one, I just do.

I thought about that, but decided I'd prefer another video game. So 1 will be a single-game like Space Invaders, and the other will be a 50-in-1 type of game somewhow. I will probably build it using a Raspberry Pi. (Fun!!)

SEGA really had some cool shit going for awhile
Wasn't that whole national geographic neo geo thing theirs? The one where you could ride in the game? That was cool

I'd go Galaga or Tron. Though I would probably do the pinball machine, and then add the 50 in one video game machine to round it out instead.

Most of the games mentioned here - Galaga, Ms. Pac Man, Centipede/Millipede, etc - I've seen combined into one gaming machine in some places. So if you are going to have one 'stand alone' game I wouldn't make it something you couldn't otherwise bundle.

So again, Tron is the winner. LOL Maybe a shooter, like Area 57. That was a cool ass machine. You could always go Star Wars tho it's a huge thing (you sit in it and fly X Wings).

I beat the world record in pacman on the Atari console...there was no end it would give you an extra life after completing each level and I had so many lives that I went away for an hour and came back and the extra lives I still had were off the bottom of the screen...i had to stop to sleep...I was about 10 years old and pacman was huge back then...

Oh and frogger was kick ass too...

I would go with this one. By far my all-time favourite game.

VINTAGE CAPCOM FINAL FIGHT ARCADE COIN OPERATED MACHINE | eBay

To be honest, I would buy it for myself right now, if shipping to here was not going to cost an arm and a leg.

I have a ZAXXON and a TRON cabinet. Those are my two favorite games.
If I were going to buy another it would be Dragon's Lair.

I've bought 5 or 6 various vintage games for my sons eventual play room in the past few months. No actual video games as of yet. I thought the prize winning and ticket dispensing games would be more enjoyable for him at a younger age. Plus an added bonus of creating a savings of sorts for him

Well my advice would be to get two cabs, old arcade stock and have one with a vertical monitor and one with a horizontal one. Forget 50 in 1 game boards and set up a raspberry pie instead running MAME with the hyperspin front end...

That way you will be able to play ALL of the games mentioned in this thread (and 100s more too) but the hyperspin front end will give the selection process of the games a professional touch and you can enjoy all the classics on real machines with proper arcade controls using the correct orientation of the monitors that each game is designed for...

ARCADE HEAVEN !!
