It's only going to get worse. As they make it harder and harder to get opioid painkillers addicts will turn to heroin.

Trump just announced that they will start going hard after drugs and seeking max sentences. . . because that has worked so well for the last 40+ years.

If they want to stop this problem they need to start with the demand and seek treatment, not jail, for addicts.

Saw the picture at the top of the article and was like "Damnit. Of course."

It's really, really bad here in SW Ohio. There's overdoses every day on the news and we usually get a couple of people who OD while on the road a month (that they report on). Yesterday there was a 5 year old who took off down the street barefoot to find help for their parents who had ODed.

I guess the cops are doing "best they can" but I wonder because you can camp out across from any gas station near the interstate and watch deals go down all day long.

Yeah, that's been the problem. Specifically with Carfentanil which a lot of dope boys were selling straight away uncut when it first hit this area. Earlier this week news hit of some assholes cutting cocaine with it which is aggravated murder as far as I'm concerned. That stuff is super deadly. A cop about an hour from here almost died earlier this week from a Carfentanil OD and all he did was brush the shit off his shirt.

The neighboring county to where I live is heroin/overdose capital of Florida. Not only are they dropping like flies from that, the heroin is mixed with fentanyl.

They actually sell narcan or equivalents at local flea markets.

People are overdosing in bathrooms and in cars everywhere.

So long as there is a demand for the product there will be people who are willing to take the risk to supply it. To me, the only way to really reduce it is to try to cut the number of users so the pushers have nobody to sell to.

As someone in the program I can tell you... 20 years ago rehab was 90% alcoholics and 10% everything else
now it's 20% alcoholics and 80% benzo addiction

it's the same story.. got hooked on painkillers which are basically heroin then when the doctor stops writing scrips on the street painkillers are sometimes $30 a PILL

some of these folks have a 50 or 60 pill a day addiction. Heroin is CHEAP CHEAP and gets them there faster

it's only going to get worse. When I was growing up I didn't know anyone that died... nowadays almost EVERY high schooler knows at least 1 kid dead of overdose

Really? Lets say you have a town and 1000 people now decides to start using drugs.
Introduce executing for using drugs and you claim that not only no less than 1000 people would do the same thing, but possibly even more?
What is the logic here?

ps: surely that number would not go down to 0, but would go down very significantly.

Do you want to live in a country where a biological disposition (the addition gene) can lead you to be executed?

Just look at the list of countries that execute people for drug crimes. With very few exceptions (and those exceptions typically are that there must be some kind of extreme case) those countries are all third world shitholes that given the choice, many people would rather not live in.

You might be okay with living in a country where the government can just decide one day to start executing people because they have a problem, but I don't want to. That is a slippery slope. What next? Are we going to execute all alcoholics? How about everyone who is overweight? Let's execute everyone who is addicted to tobacco, or gambling, or sex, or sugar, or anything.

If you killed 1000 people in one town for using drugs do you think that is going to stop addiction in other towns? Hell no. It likely wouldn't stop it in that town. Addiction destroys everything unless it is treated properly. If a guy is shooting heroin he knows he is doing something illegal and very dangerous, but they don't care. Telling them you will kill them if you catch them isn't going to stop them.

I've been using Portugal as a good example of a way to deal with drugs for a long time and most people blow me off by saying, "The US is much bigger, more culturally diverse country." I personally don't buy that. I think we could pick a place, try it out and see if it works. If it does we roll it out nationwide. The problem is that we have been fed lied and propaganda about the drug war our entire lives so there is a big segment of the population who thinks the only way to fix the problem is to lock more people up. When people have believed something their entire lives it is hard to change their minds.
