BEWARE: NameCheap Just Changed it's Domain Renewal Grace Period On April 27th to Scam You

On April 27th NameCheap changed their terms

You are no longer guaranteed a 27 day redemption period when your domain expires.

How is a grace period of any length a "scam?"

The registrar is required to pay for the renewal upon expiration and get refunded upon deletion so technically the domain is theirs the moment it expires. So what they chose to do with it from that point is up to them. You should also note that namecheap is and has always been a enom reseller/registry.

That's incorrect. Tucows owns Enom and Namecheap is their own registrar.

I don't see that anywhere online so it must not be true.

Tucows bought enom a few years back. Namecheap is an enom reseller as well as accredited itself. They only became accredited 5 or so years ago. I'm sure newly purchased domains since being accredited go into their own basket but any prior are still at enom.

It is true..

I made my living in the domain business for many years until cashing out several years ago.... I lived and breathed domains so I do know a few things.

Incorrect.

Tucows bought Enom this year in January.

Brightside still owns NameCheap and they are doing all their registrations through their own ICANN account. Which probably explains the change in TOS (which I never received notice of via email) for the now non guaranteed 27 renewal grace period , before it was a flat out renewal grace period of 27 days before they took possession of your domain and tried to auction it.

i wonder what non guarenteed really means. do they cherry pick domains from accounts that have expired for themselves at any given time now? i know they have always done this after the 27th day. they will let you renew at the normal rate past day 27 if you contact them unless its a domain they liked and kept for themselves. i guess its best to not let any domain expire there. i'm still in the process of moving all my domains out of there since the prices are higher than elsewhere anyways..

NameCheap is more expensive than everyone, that's part of why I'm transferring all domains back to GoDaddy.

Since selling off Enom to TuCows in January NameCheap has to make a big profit quick to remain a public company. The quote below is from here

"Rightside’s market cap before the announcement was $158 million. Unless Rightside can quickly grow its revenue from new top level domain names–something that seems unlikely–I can’t imagine it remaining a public company for long"

Maybe the new strategy is their current ripoff $10.69 renewals with no coupons available and taking domains earlier than the old 27 day grace period and charging the $200 ransom fee after 5 days or 10 days?

I never received notice of the policy change did you?

I've been out for 5 or so years. I think I may have been thinking about the Demand Media deal which was many years ago who knows I don't care to keep up anymore. One thing is for sure. The registrar pays at expiration and is reimbursed upon deletion. This is why they are allowed to do auctions (godaddy) within weeks. It's also how enom amassed a large portfolio of domains. They would hold domains with any sort of real history. In fact they are still sitting on my first website domain that I sold years ago and the buyer eventually dropped.

Yup all my domains are there too. I dealt with Enom in the past but got tired of them raising the prices all the time.

So pay your domains on time or move them.

Namecheap is involved with shady activity where they "steal" certain expired domains. I haven't had it happen to me, but there are numerous stories posted to forums.

The whois changes to a residential address (it's always the same guy) and completely disappears from the domain owner's account. Complaints that expiration notices were never received often accompany this.

You can then contact namecheap and complain about this and they renew the domain and put it back in your account.

What's exactly going on here is anyone's guess. Some say Namecheap is preying on domains and moving them to the account of an individual when they expire in hopes that the domain owner will never notice.

And about the ICANN registrar thing..... I don't buy new domains there, so I can't say if those are under Namecheap or not, but I did do some transfers in using black friday or cyber money codes or something and those are under Enom.

I have migrated most of my domains to Namesilo as well. Closing out Namecheap and Internet BS. Although Internet BS is a good registrar also, just consolidating to Namesilo.

The scam is no Longer being guaranteed a 27 day redemption period and not being notified of that change in terms.

Clearly they change was done around the same time the parted ways with Enom. I have many domains with NameCheap and never got a notice of change of terms, then again their terms can change at any time without notice

I'm doing this as well, I have to do them bit by bit or my email gets flooded with confirmations and it's too easy to miss one.

With the NameSilo coupon "save$$$" my transfers are only $7.39 and includes free private whois for life

NameSilo $7.39 + Free Whois = $7.39 Tax included

NameCheap $10.87 + $2.71 Whois = $13.58 Tax included

No coupons for NameCheap renewals!
