Jesus..this is causing people to go bonkers on FB 6/2(1+2)

For your benefit the correct answer is 1.

if you use google or wolphram alpha you will get 9..i know
it is because they change the question so their software can tackle it.
this is a clickbait question.

Consider this:

If we let a=1+2

then 6÷2(1+2) would be written as 6÷2a

or 6(over)2a

which is not the same as

6÷2×a

or 6(over)2×a

I am losing my faith in humanity.

These are the most irritating things on facebook. So many idiots keep typing their wrong answers and they take it as an insult if you tell them that they were wrong and try to explain why. Never cared about these posts, never will, let them think they are right, it's easier for everyone

You're right, but it's simpler to point people to the order of operations to illustrate the point:

6÷2(1+2)

1 step: 1 + 2 = 3
2 step: 2 x 3 = 6
3 step: 6 ÷ 6 = 1

Answer: 1

I pretty much failed math in school but this is basic level shit.

A lot of the time, especially with click bait math, it is poorly formed questions in the first place. A properly formed equation should only ever have one answer. If there is room for interpretation then whomever wrote the question is the fool instead.

There is only one answer to the question posed. It is just that google and other software based math programs can't handle it the way it is posed.

SO for humans it is fine. IF writing for a machine to decipher you must take special care.

you are not a machine so you should be fine with it and thus come to the only answer that should be possible.........1

the equation being 6/2(1+2) Yes, that is clear. That was in your title, i missed it.

simpler version though:

6/[2(1+2)]
6/[2(3)]
6/6 = 1
