Marijuana Will Be Legal In Canada By July 2018!!

4 plants per house!

Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was elected in 2015. He campaigned on the promise that he would end marijuana prohibition in Canada. Since his election things have been rough on the marijuana policy front, and that's putting it lightly. Raids have been common, all the while with large marijuana companies controlling the regulated medical marijuana market. Many Canadians (and beyond) have been running out of patience waiting for legalization. They will have to wait a bit longer, but there is finally an expected launch date.

The only thing that will change is making it more expensive and harsher charges for selling outside of the approved vendors so I can't imagine why anyone would get excited about it.

Funny thing is I bought my pot seeds from an online Canadian store CropKingSeeds.com last year

BTW they all germinated, not one bad seed in the bunch!

Now, if you can only get your free health care to pay for your weed.

And while you stoners are laying around watching cartoons and free pirated porn. Mexicans take your jobs and political power positions.

Nyc is high up North. Toronto more so. Ottawa and Quebec are especially cold. Legal weed is going to be highly profitable.

This, absolutely.

The medical marijuana is already more expensive than blackmarket marijuana, and you can bet that there will be a bloated administration (anyone remember the farce of a bloated tax black hole that was the long gun registry here?) to oversee it that will be paid for by marijuana taxes. Then, of course, the "sin taxes" on top of that again, not unlike the crazy taxes on alcohol and tobacco.

Frankly, I can see crime and arrests increasing as a result because the price of gov't run marijuana will be so cost prohibitive that the black market will thrive even more.

That said, it should be outright legal anyway. Legislating a plant is the height of ridiculousness and always has been. You don't need a vendor list, nor an oversight committee, and certainly not legislation. Officially declare it legal and let the free market dictate itself.

while I agree with your last paragraph, I can't help but disagree with the rest.

When you buy weed, you get what you get, even if your dealer is your good buddy and you helped him grow the plants yourself, you don't know what you are getting, you don't know what the THC level is going to be, you don't know what chemicals were put on it, you don't know if it was shitty and your guy laced it with something else to make it better.

With medical cannabis in Canada (I am sure it is likely similar in other places) you get to leaf through a magazine and read about the different strains, they tell you the effects and side effects of each, the chemical makeup etc. Your almost guaranteed that you will get an untainted product that will have the effects you are seeking, (I say almost because in it's infancy, the industry is having issues with recalls due to pesticide use, but they are getting busted for it, so I am guessing it will only get better). That has value, to me that has a lot of value.

Your good buddy can tell you "hey man this is purple widow maker indie bombshell kush" all he wants, that doesn't mean shit, you might be getting a bag of oregano with a bit of ketamine sprinkled on it.

Canadian households are being given the opportunity to grow their own. It's cost a few dollars for seeds, and unless you hate nature, most people already have everything they need to grow. You might spend $20 on chemicals to increase yield, but that's pretty insignificant. 4 plants might not sound like much, but if you germinate indoors and stay on top of things, I have seen lots of plants yields a QP to a HP over the years, even in our frigid norther climate. For people who don't have that kind of patience, you can grow one mother plant, clone it and pump out 3 producers about every 12 weeks.

Shoppers Drug Mart is pushing hard for the rights to sell marijuana up here and in Ontario there is a good chance the LCBO (liquor stores) will be carrying it as well. These are two places I shop at weekly already.

I think any increases in cost are likely to be worth it when you look at the accompanying increase in quality, reliability, safety, choice and available information; and I think they can be easily offset by the fact that people do not have to be paranoid about growing their own.

PR Phil, I agree with some of what you said, but my point was that anyone who thinks the blackmarket is going to be hurt by this is naive.

The government WILL tax the hell out of this. Which in itself is not an issue. The problem will be the gov't tends to overbloat things to cover huge bureaucratic oversight which you'd have to believe is going to be part of this. It's much too lucrative a business to let slide for bureaucracy and "job creation".

The gov't and the blackmarket will absolutely compete for potency and price. I heard one report where there was suggestion of a permit based system, where legal vendors need a permit and BUYERS need a license. If that thought process goes forward, you're just giving the blackmarket a big orgasm.

It's not often that a bunch of bureaucrats can get something right. I am certainly not holding my breath this bunch of bureaucrats gets this right either. I'm hopeful they do, but after the fiasco of the gun registry and the entire farce that was -- and some actually defending the long gun registry still and wanting it back -- I'm not holding my breath that they get this right either.

Well there are going to be trade offs and certainly like anything our government does, the first iteration will not be ideal, I can't disagree with that. I just think that in the end, or eventually, this will change a lot of things for the better.

I make my own beer, because I don't like paying $40+ a case when I can make it for about it for $6 a case at home and I know I'm never buying beer that was on the shelf for 6 months. I think this is a similar situation, if you are unhappy with what taxes do the price, there is a legal way to get around paying them and as you said, there will always be a black market you can turn to.

I just put my mom in a nursing home in December, she deals with a lot of chronic pain, as well as headaches due to issues with her eyesight. She's won't consider trying weed because it is illegal and she thinks that would make her a bad person. Legalization is the only thing that will convince people like her to try it and see if it helps.
