Do you think you'd be more successful if you weren't motivated by money?

What if you were motivated by something INTERNAL like the satisfaction of proving to yourself you can do something that seemed so IMPOSSIBLE? Would this lead to better results than being motivated by something EXTERNAL like what other people think or how much money you can get?

I mean, if you were motivated by something INTERNAL.

Like something that can't be taken away from you or doesn't depend on what other people do....

maybe provide a few examples? cause by definition "success" involves other people

"success: the attainment of wealth, position, honors, or the like."

and by "attainment" it really means, attainment of more/higher/better than most people...

Are you saying there is something internal that's never influenced by the external?

If even ones sense of self changes over time, what internally could be more resolute than that, and motivating?

This is a great fucking question.
The answer is 100% yes. I wasted 10-15 years pursuing things I hated doing, because I thought they were trendy and would be profitable. It actually cost me my life savings and relationships chasing after (fake) shiny objects.

If instead I just did what I liked I'd probably be a millionaire now instead of broke. And way happier in life.

I get bitter sometimes because I've been struggling so many years

I was always motivated by doing something as well as I could. Money was the result not the cause.

Shit that sucks. How did you lose your life savings chasing after shiny objects?

I can't say I would eagerly work for free, but money is not the main motivating factor for sure.

I am motivated by something other than money. I am a bit over weight, and determined to get under 200 lbs. I like cycling. Late last year I was able to make it up to fifty miles. My goal for this year is 100 miles.

really weird to me that you pose this as a hypothetical.

for me on the pragmatic side work is a sense of purpose, a way to occupy my head, a way to make sure I have what I need, can give what is needed and a way to make sure I don't end up old and poor

I don't care about money as long as I have enough of it that I don't have to worry about me or peeps I love and I'm scrub to the core and my people are self-sufficient so that amount is low.

I'm a workaholic though with some lucrative sources so objectively I earn a lot. the vast majority of my spending is straight to savings. was actually talking the topic yesterday with a chica so funny to come across it here too.

for me work is a mix of feeling like my time on this dot means something, the ability to buy grapes even if they are not on sale, my bag-lady-prevention safety-net and an after school program to keep my mind out of trouble.

want to be clear that there's no reason or motive more valid than any other when it comes to drive to work though. anyone who gets out of bed and does productive ish, paid or not, that contributes something deserves respect for the act

those who tear down to earn though? that's where money above all gets scary :/

Everything you do in life is motivated by money.

Money is a key component to live, be happy, etc. Without money you cannot pay your bills, go on that vacation, feed yourself, clothe yourself, give yourself a place to live.

Sure you can do all that without money, but money makes it easier to do, and for that, money is a motivator period.

The problem with external motivation sources is, ultimately, they don't withstand the test of time.

Of course, I think it would be amazing if we could all pursue our true passion or what we are truly good at and feel good doing. Imagine how much humanity would accomplish if this were the case and not everything was motivated by paper with faces on them? If you didn't have to worry about feeding your family and getting them proper medical care I bet we could do absolutely amazing things so fast it would make your head spin.

Read the article by Robert Gryn, the founder of codewise (voluum and zeropark) he is worth like 175 million now and he was just an affiliate worth nearly nothing in 2011. He says money doesn't motivate him at all anymore, it's just a score to keep. Like a game, it's just his competitive spirit. Now he's focused on improving and making the best of his passion. A lot like Elon Musk, he went BK twice after his paypal billions and was worth nearly nothing now he's back to billionaire and doing things he has a passion for.
