Ed Snowden Says Smartphones Can Be "Controlled"

Snowden in his latest revelations reveals your smartphone can be switched on without you knowing it, enabling AUDIO and VIDEO to be sent back to the NSA/GCHQ using capabilities named after SMURFs (those blue cartoon characters lol)

Once GCHQ had gained access to a user's handset, Mr Snowden said the agency would be able to see "who you call, what you've texted, the things you've browsed, the list of your contacts, the places you've been, the wireless networks that your phone is associated with. And they can do much more. They can photograph you.

Edward Snowden interview: 'Smartphones can be taken over' - BBC News

He's on Panorama (A UK show):

There is no doubt in my mind this is true. It's disappointing that anyone ever thought otherwise.

BBC just wanted "good" headline for their interview, thats why they had to chose something "screaming" for the public

It will come as a surprise to freedom loving people everywhere but why should ANYTHING come as a surprise to:

I was musing earlier today that because my 4G mobile broadband dongle is actually an embedded Linux device, which you can telnet into and log into as root (if you know the password), it's likely that it could be taken over.

I just logged into it and confirmed that the telnet connection is listening on "any" address, not just the USB interface. In other words, you may be able to telnet into this device through the mobile interface... from the internet...

this is true. Smart phones have made people extra dumb. Some people stop thinking for themselves cause their phones hold all the answers. Then it use to be that the only bad drivers on the road were old people and drunks but now texting and driving is 6 times more dangerous than drinking and driving.

Don't get me wrong I love me phone but it doesn't run my life

Duh a smartphone though cool is the single best way to be tracked. Get a blackphone 2 or turing if you are that concerned. D-vasic pro free will tell you if your mic is being used, your camera, your speaker or bluetooth anything. free from the google store. Use a stingray monitor if you are concerned with interception or GPS location. Better yet use textsecure adn redphone for all your communication. Nothing is full proof I know and once they have you in their cross hair it's nearly impossible but the point is stay hidden in plain site. Encrypt your phone, enable 10 attempts until it bricks then they can't brute force it. Not much else they can do to then.

have you watched "deep web" on amazon, it's the full real snowden documentary from start to finish. The guy is a genius, the most advanced agency in the world NSA couldn't get him I'd say he's pretty good at what he does What I found cool was he put a sheet over his head to put his password in cause the NSA does have heuristic ways of seeng what you are typing in the open. He also says a 10 digit passcode would take the NSA 3 days to brute force open, so ya might wanna make those a bit better, or just like BB does you have 10 attempts and then the phone is bricked adn erased securely.

News flash: your phone needs to be tracked by the cell towers in order to maintain communication in the event that someone wants to call you.

No amount of simplification (ie using an old flip) will remove this fundamental requirement.

i mean when it comes down to it, if the NSA or GCHQ is after YOU and I mean really after you. There probably isn't much you can do other than give up all tech completely forever. OR get with a person who specializes in changing ID's and they do exist. Just expensive.

But other than that, they aren't some magical eye in the sky seeing all and knowing all, just stay off their radar and you'll be fine. When I mean a GOOD VPN I just meant one that uses openVPN 256 at least and keeps NO logs ever, some keep logs so your use can be correlated with things and you don't want that, but even that is minor and they would need to be onto you already. Use textsecure, redphone, surf on a VPN always, use secure WIFI also you'll be fine.

If you want to use a phone, yeah by nature they are going to know where you are LOL, that is the point, but ou can keep them from knowing what you are doing with the above programs. Wickr won't even allow the phone to take a screen shot of your screen and destructs the msgs when you tell it to. plus 512 bit encryption, no one can beat that. Use long long passwords, more than 15 characters. Get a samsung SSD and it has 256 encryption hardware built in, turn it on and make a good password, that way if it gets stolen in vegas or something it's useless to the person. Same with phones, who cares about locating your iphone if its stolen, encrypt it, then it's useless.

Also if you are using a VPN then connecting to TOR to get on say something you shouldn't don't do it at home please. Yeah you're pretty secure BUT you never know, use an encrypted laptop and use an open wifi at a cafe or something, you'll be fine.

Now the day quantum computing comes along......we might be fucked lol, they can break 512 bit in minutes. But I think we will just quantum to make nearly impossible algo's as well so it will continue to be a stalemate. One simple thing though to beat all the computing power in the world, when you encrypt your laptop, phone, home computer only allow 10 attempts before it's secure deleted. My S6 does this by default as do most blackberries. Really buying a blackphone is a waste all they do is use samsung knox to seperate the phone into two entities. The new app by mcafee is free and let's you know if your mic is being used, camera, speaker, everything, Very neat security. Also aomei has a stingray detector app you can use as well to see if you are being targeted since they only work on 2g.

how can you know that they actually do what they promise ? how can you be sure than lets say, 20 % of all VPN companies are not NSA honeyspots ? (did you read nsa "core secrets" leaked documents ?) ? there is no independent audit of vpn companies..they may write anything about what they deliver, but in reality, while browsing with them you may give up your privacy (datamining, datasharing etc.) even better than while using just your ISP...

Dude! There are some paranoid mother fuckers at this board. I mean so what if you want to track my phone.. It travels less than 15 miles a week and 95 percent of that is my once a week trip to town for groceries.. I dont use my phone to txt hookers or buy drugs.. Wanna use my phone to listen into my convos? Well i do talk to myself all day but really if you dont do shit wrong and arent racist and verbally voicing your hatred of gov then you really should have nothing to worry about.

I agree completely with you it's tough that's why we can't be totally sure. The EFF does a good job auditing VPN's and they have some open source ones that can be effectively safe. but as you said, what if the EFF is in their pocket too ))))))))))))

Hey at least we made the LEO officers in this country work for a living again LOL, they had gotten so lazy it was sad.

As to the guy who posted above, we work in pornography or most of us do so we do need to be a bit more careful than most when it comes to security. Imagine if Jeb Bush or someone like that or ted cruz were to get in the white house. Then you'd effectively be out of business or at in jail if you stayed in the US. Just remember Ben franklin; those that give up a little bit of liberty for security deserve neither. Or I think that is how it goes )))

nah, i would actually trust EFF. you know, not everyone in this life & world is just for money.
but what do you mean that they actually DOaudit VPNs ? first time i heard about it...
actually I had idea to create independent body of vpn auditors (that could be run by some experts, leaded by for example people from eff or torproject etc.) - and they could audit any given vpn in any given time. audits would be unscheduled and usually done by surprise, like one time in month. those vpn providers that would be OK with that, would earn some certificate - that after some time could become standard in vpn industry....

usually those who love power and are in power ,admire people like you. some even call them "sheeps". they love people who can give up all their basic human rights for various reasons
but you are right that having total privacy and anonymity requires a lot of work these days (or going offline), which is not comfortable option.
if the surveillance agencies would think the same like you ("we only target bad guys"), they wouldnt target whole societies and EVERYONE worldwide...what for ? maybe you will find answer by thinking for yourself, it doesnt hurt

If I recall correctly, Apple holds some sort of patent on it's built feature to disable the Iphone on demand (of the goon squad?).

It's bad enough that our privacy is considered valueless by people who would never accept that same standard for themselves.

Now big corps are vying to be the best at peeping, owning, and trading on that technology.

Yes where have you been? Many many VPN's have come to be audited whether it was planned or was a move by law enforcement holding a warrant and for the most part they did exactly what they said on their page, vyprvpn is one that has a shady past on logging.

being audited on subpoenas and how they act with them - is different thing than being audited on vpn's network holes, backdors, logging - etc...........

I'm pretty sure if the FBI serves a VPN with a legit subpoena they will find ANY and all backdoor logging or any information of value and the only time that has happened to my knowledge was when the server was physically taken offline and manipulated by hand. I'm pretty sure snowden was a pretty big target for the US and he beat them with VPN's and TOR so I feel pretty safe using the same things. Quit being so paranoid, they don't care about you so quit aacting like they are after you lol.
