After reading the big Wired story on him earlier this week my understanding is that nobody was actually murdered. He hired people to kill others, but they were all faked. Unless I misunderstood.

Either way, he is going away for a very long time. Even if nobody died he did try to order the deaths of others and they will want to make a example out of him to discourage others from running a site like this. I would imagine he will spend the rest of his life in jail.

Yep, no proof about people being murdered but the prosecution are stating that the drug trafficking/supply has lead to at least 6 deaths hence the increased sentencing. Ulbricht`s people are stating that their is no proof that his marketplace was actually responsible.

Ah, that makes sense. I know his lawyer argued that he was just a dumb kid who started this as an experiment and made a mistake, but clearly as it got huge he knew what he was doing and when he paid to have people killed that is no mistake.

The article I read said he still may have a second trial on the charges of him hiring a person to kill someone because the guy he hired was a DEA agent that was undercover, however, it turns out that DEA agent was also blackmailing Ross so who knows if there will someday be more charges.

Yeah, "a total setup"... he willfully and knowingly created the worlds largest online drug purchase and distribution system. He also attempted to have at least 5 people murdered (paid to have them killed and believed they were killed). At least 6 people died from illegal drugs bought there WITH HIS KNOWLEDGE and he was not only unsympathetic but defiant about it.

That Wired article needs to be made into a feature film. I do believe the guy believed himself to be a revolutionary, totally got swept away and came to believe his cause justified even murder.

He started out your basic bright kid with a libertarian philosophy looking to be a big success in business, the overnight success of Silk Road went to his head and because it had to be a secret his whole life was lived online in the company of sycophants which led even more grandiosity. I didn't follow the trial but it seems like the defense should have presented him as suffering from a serious personality disorder.

I don't condone what he did but it's long overdue that we decriminalize drugs, we've failed miserably and created violent criminals locally and globally meanwhile the rest of us getting no benefit from the taxes that could be collected. If he had done this without taking anything for himself other than paying for the costs to run the operation, and not paid for hits on several people, as scummy as they were, I'd admire him. But he wasn't the pure idealist he deluded himself he was, they rarely are. So I don't have much sympathy for him.
