So I'm Watching 'Pawn Stars' Today And Just Realized...

...I don't own a single fucking thing I could sell to that pawn shop. Everything I have is new and shitty. How depressing!

And expensive too, but so what? What am I gonna do, walk into the pawn shop with my 60 inch Samsung flatscreen and go, "Give me $50 for it, I paid $2,000"?

All my technology shit put together I probably paid $8,000-$10,000 and I bet I couldn't pawn it all for $500. LOL

I have a 52" Sony projo screen in the basement we paid $4299 for about 14 years ago. Still works...but I'd have to pay someone $50 bucks to haul it away.

We'll likely include it with the house when we put it on the market this spring.

No, in fact they have castings for people to bring things in to see if they are worthy of being on the tv show.

If they bought guns I would be in business otherwise I am in the same boat you are. Electronics really aren't worth shit to a pawn shop.

How much do pawn shops give? Lets say that 60 inch TV is worth $500 on craiglist/ebay market. They should give something around $350 for that, no?
$50 maybe for tv that is worth $100?

Average rate pawn shops pay for current and in demand consumer goods is around 20% to 25% of retail price. So if a hot new TV retails for $1000, expect to get around $200...and only if it is still current and in-demand (meaning the TV is 1 or 2 years old).

Ay TV that is only worth $100 is probably a few generations old and not in demand anymore. it would be lucky to get offered $5 for it at a pawn shop.

I have a couple of pieces of autographed sports memorabilia that could bring in a something at a pawn shop and I have a couple of cool vintage pieces of bar equipment that are pretty cool, but beyond those I don't have much of anything.

Technology products depreciate rapidly in value, particularly when they are more than a few months old. Never expect to get anything near what you paid for them when you go to sell them.

Pawn shops and antique shops have physical overhead to maintain and often have to hold onto merchandise for a while before reselling it. Given that, they will typically pay much less for items than you could get by selling them online. You should never sell anything to a pawn shop if you're not desperate for immediate money.

used to like the show, now it kinda sucks, dont watch it any longer.

If you sell anything to a pawn shop or second hand store, its worth 10 cents on the dollar when you bought it new ! As soon as you take it out of the store, it is "USED" merchandise, no matter how good the shape is. It is also a totally different market !

I saw a porn vid on YouJizz recently and it was set in a pwan shop. All I could think of while watching it was Chum Lee, Rick, Corey and the Old Man running a train on that poor girl. LOL

I wonder if they ever 'pawned' a blowjob? LOL

I almost walked into that shop a few years ago but there was a lineup to get in so I skipped it.

I'd love to see some of the classic stuff they might have. Cars, arcade games, 1930's - 60's electronics...

The wife and I often watched the show for the first few seasons.

I felt bad for some of the people who came in forced to give away priceless family heirlooms. The worst was some guy who had a tactical invasion map of Iwo Jima his father (or was it grandfather?) carried in to battle. How fucked up is your life if you have to part with something irreplaceable like that for chump change?

I think some of too is that different people don't value things in the same way. There are plenty of kids and grandkids who end up with family heirlooms passed down from their parents and grandparents and they don't give a damn about them.

I used to buy storage units and every now and then I would come across a unit that was full of stuff that clearly belonged to an older person. There would be pictures and family items that had no real monetary value, but couldn't be replaced and yet they were just left in here as they had no value and nobody had any interest in them.

Point taken.

I come from a long lineage of military ancestors - so I just naturally attach significant value to heritage items like that. I guess everyone's different as you say.

I'm the same way as you. Certain things from my family have a meaning to me and I hold a value to them.

A good example is when my grandma on my mom's side died my aunt got her china. It wasn't anything real special or expensive, but they grew up using it so it meant something to my mom, her sister and two brothers. A few years later my aunt took some of the plates and had clocks made out of them. They are pretty cool looking. She gave one to my mom and each of my two uncles. It is one of my mom's prized possessions. When she dies my brother or I will take it because it also means a lot to us. A handful of years back when one of my uncles died his two kids were cleaning out his place. They knew what the item was and instead of even asking if anyone wanted it, they just threw it in the trash.

There is a woman that works at a grocery store I shop at regularly. She is likely in her late 70's and just works there part time as something to do. She is very nice. One day she and I were talking about my buying storage units and she told me about something she and her husband have. Her husband is older then her and was an 18-year-old communications operator at the end of WW2. He was stationed in Hawaii at the time. When the word came down from the pentagon that a cease fire with Japan had been reached and the war was over they sent communications via teletype to their four main hubs and those hubs then relayed the information via radio etc to other bases, ships, communications outposts etc. He was stationed at one of those hubs and was working when the teletype came across. After they did their job and relayed the info, he rolled the teletype up and kept it. He still has it. It is one of only four originals from that day and he has no idea what became of the others so it may be the only surviving original. I have no idea if it is valuable or not (I assume it is), but it means a lot to him and she is worried their kids will throw it out because they don't care about it. I told her to take it to someone to have it appraised and even if it has no real value if her kids don't want it arrange for it to be donated. Any number of museums would love to have it.

Remember the show is set in Las Vegas so I'm betting a lot of those people selling their shit are degenerate gamblers.

You can tell the real desperate types who walk in and go, "I want $3,500 for this thing" and Rick goes, "I'll give you $400". If the guy goes, "Can you go up to $500??" he's desperate. LOL

Some questions:

Are all those experts they are always calling in ("I have a friend...") just seconds away and always available to haul their ass down to a fucking pawn shop? Do they get paid for their appraisels or do they just do it cause.....why? WTF? LOL

Why is it always so quiet and dead in their "office"? It's like no one is ever there yet there are lines to get in. The Old Man sleeping, etc....wtf?

Do they ever actually SELL anything?

And so basically the entire "point" of the show, it's dramatic center, is whether or not Rick and the Old Man make money.

WTF????????????????

They're ebay powersellers, all that "cool stuff" is in a warehouse somewhere.

The actual famous Gold & Silver Pawn Shop sells mostly Pawn Stars merchandise (tshirts, mugs, bobbleheads, etc). I heard a rumor they do something like $20k/day in tshirt sales.

There's also a small selection of popular pawnshop shit, overpriced used watches and engagement rings, and a decent Superbowl ring selection. Fans save up to buy that stuff for the story I guess.

You can tell the real desperate types who walk in and go, "I want $3,500 for this thing" and Rick goes, "I'll give you $400". If the guy goes, "Can you go up to $500??" he's desperate. LOL

They have a ton of walk in business. There is a long line just to get in to shop. My understanding is that they close down the shop when they shoot the show and they shoot a ton of episodes back to back. The experts are all told when they are shooting and make themselves available. And, of course, all the stuff that takes place in between them buying the items is all scripted and set up.

Fascinating story.

I can imagine something like that would be highly valuable - hopefully she's wrong about the kids and they come to treasure it as a piece of family history.

I tried going into their shop a couple years ago. The line to get in was so long we just said screw that...

It would be interesting to see everything they have in there, though.

Sometimes I take a vacation from being the cynical, jaded, entertainment insider bastard that I really am. LOL I like to pretend I'm one of the countless dumbasses out there who actually think this shit is "reality". After all, they're the ones I'm trying to sell my porn stars to. :D

So it is along the lines of what I said (20-25% of 2000 retail comes close to those $400 or so ).

Having said that - pawn shops do not really base prices on retail tags, but rather on the "market price" for the (used) item. Which is what I meant by ebay/craiglist prices.
If a hot selling used item goes for 500 on craiglist pawns shops have no problem giving lets say 300 for them.
