As I looked through the current issue of AVN today I was struck by just how much the magazine has changed, reflecting just how much the industry has changed.

The DVD companies advertising make up less than ten percent of the ads, and even at that many of them, including Evil Angel had ads indicating that DVDs were coming AFTER the website release of the scenes. The real stunner was how many of the advertisers are either owned by or affiliated with Manwin.

When you went for the reviews, long the staple of AVN there were maybe a half dozen, the rest were just "New Release" listings that contained only a cover photo, and these "new releases" were 2 to 3 months old.

I recently dropped by the local adult video store, I have had a long relationship with them and they talk freely to me, they have even posted here. The crux of his business has changed from DVD sales and rentals to adult novelties. The owner told me that DVD rentals were at best 25% of what they were 5 years ago. Plain and simple he said, it's a dying business. People get their porn on the internet now.

With this slowdown, now the industry has been caught with it's pants down. In the hurry for mainstream acceptance we failed to protect our most valuable asset, the performers. We got the attention we wanted and a whole lot we didn't. Los Angeles County is on it's way to making it patently illegal to shoot without condoms, The city has already passed such an ordinance. Porners are rattling their sabres, threatening to pull out of California and go elsewhere. However it's an empty threat and porners know it. They simply can't afford to pull up and relocate but the bigger problem is no place else wants them.

The half assed industry lobbying group the FSC squandered whatever war chest it may have had on bloated administration salaries and now find themselves on the verge of financial collapse, they no longer have an industry to prop them up and efforts to generate revenue by strong arming webmasters and setting up a testing network have no real support.

Porn production is no longer enough to keep the performers making a living, most are venturing out into prostitution to supplement their income enough to make ends meet.

A long time ago Bill Margold addressed congress and told them to leave porners alone because we would destroy ourselves. he caught a lot of heat for that comment, from porners. The same porners that have destroyed themselves.
