The examples that you posted of you and your son are irrelavant. We talk here about low skilled guys that cant provide for themselves in their home countries. Thats why they will go anywhere just to to get basics.
If you have basics covered, later you may think and consider if taking job opportunity for 50 % more somewhere is worth it or not.

As I said, it depends on the initial location. Course most Mexicans will go to the States (a single jump and you are there). Most people from the old Soviet Union republics will prefer Russia. Look at Armenians for example. I've seen a lot of them in LA - for some reason they love that city (Cher, Kardashians etc). But most of them will prefer Moscow or Sochi. The same applies to other post-Soviet nations. They live by near, they know Russian language and Russian culture. Many have relatives here.
