There are plenty of ways to get around this by the way, blocking them with your .htaccess files for example. There's even wordpress plugins to block out deep linked images if you're running that cms.
The pain with duplicated text content is that you can't do a lot about it except for DMCA complaints if the theft is done manually. If the theft is on auto-pilot you can very likely block them out or make them eat content that will harm them.
