6 seconds is a hideously slow time especially when the page simply stays white as yours does. You need to load some content quickly so users are busy looking at that and dont realise just how long it is taking to complete.
Id also agree re the footer, the list of categories makes the footer silly long, maybe move them to a drop down or float them left to sit side by side?
