Perl Programmer Available

Seeking long-term, permanent employment. I'm a little nervous about taking a job in this sector, but I'm hoping this could be a way of re-entering the field after some years away.

I still write Perl code for my own systems at home (I support a few low-traffic websites for local business). I use OO and MySQL. I've done web scraping, website support, O/S support, and configuration management, all using Perl. I've written some very large applications, including a continuous integration-type system.

I try to keep code simple, avoiding the more exotic features of the language, because while I find Perl flexible and very adaptable to many different areas, code also needs to be maintainable. There is not always time to dabble for days and weeks through obfuscated and needlessly clever code to find a solution to an urgent issue. I probably use 5 or 6 constructs most of the time. Other people have commented on how clean my code is (usually). I'm not into clever; I prefer solid working software over Kewl, man, Kewl. It is on very rare occasion I engage in side-effect code (other than autoincrement of course).

I've written object packages in Perl 5 and have applied closures and a very few other esoteric features of the language, which as I said, I generally avoid. I only use these when necessary or to effect some kind of simplification of the inevitable future maintenance.

I know HTML, and even wrote some version 5 web code with built-in media support (worked, too, amazingly), animations, and some of the other new features. I've written my share of javascript and have worked with jnode a little bit. I know PHP and Python, but have not used them nearly as much as Perl. Natch, I know C and C++ and Java.

Let me know what you are working on and how I might be able to help your development and support effort.
