The idea was influenced by both the idea of free hosts but also the commonly available blogging platforms that are increasingly disallowing adult content, Google Blogger being the latest.
By using Wordpress we open the doors for a lot of functionality, the ability to use third party blogging tools is one aspect we think people will really like.
There are some great third party tools available, one which I really recommend is for the Mac and it's called MarsEdit - you can manage dozens of blogs from the one desktop app.
